We have eaten at this cafe a few times and it is always classed as a 'treat' wether its just the wife and I or if it's a catch up with family or friends or if we have visitors from overseas. So on Saturday we had friends from overseas and we took them to Coogee and had a nice walk to Bronte and back followed with a quick dip in the surf, after drying off and changing into fresh clothes, we (my wife and i) were keen to take them to Barzura for breakfast. The morning was going well and the sun was shining as we got a table for 4 and after being seated was asked for drinks to start off with, we began to tell the waitress our orders, 2 x flat whites, 2 x orange juices, 1 x mango smoothie and 1 x (kids) banana smoothie for myself... well I was quickly told that I could not have the (kids) banana smoothie as I was an adult and the banana smoothie was only for kids, with no alternative on offer, i questioned her if this was a joke as a banana smoothie was what i wss really looking forward to and not any of the oher smoothies on their menu, again she said it was the cafes policy that it was only for kids and is there something else i wanted, I was lost for words and a little embarrassed in front of my friends, so I let it go and said no there's nothing else i want. I was annoyed but didn't wanf to ruin our morning ovef a banana smoothie so i focused on what was in front of me and enjoyed the company of my friends and the great morning we were having, we ordered the rest of our breakfast and my friends were still perplexed about 'banana smoothie' policy and did try and have a laugh about it saying they saw something like this on a Ricky Gervais comedy 'After Life' but it was a first time seeing it in real life. Anyway they flew out the next day to Uluru, and he sent me a text... "They let me order the kids pizza in Yulara" So long story short i won be going back to Barzura again and it's a place I wont be recommending to meet up with friends, there's so many good places to spend my hard earned cash in Coogee, it's time to find somewhere new to meet up with friends to have something to eat and enjoy they're company and hopefully ill be enjoying a banana...
Read moreRelaxing place, wonderful food, excellent atmosphere. But I'm writing to say thanks. Barzura is my Dad's favourite restaurant. Dad has dementia and Barzura really is his happy spot. He adores the Nasi Goreng, always comments of the high quality of the "pink stuff" (bacon) and talks about going back all the time. He also thinks you do some of the best chips in Sydney! I agree. We come in often for early lunch and both really look forward to it. But I'm writing this because I have so many good things to say about the staff and really wanted to say thanks. Nobody bats an eyelid at Dad's differences, they are always so willing to listen to his requests, which can be difficult to understand, and always treat him with dignity and kindness. It means a lot to both of us that he feels like he's listened to and treated like anyone else when we eat at Barzura. I have dietary restrictions, and I love the wealth of vegan and GF options (between us we are pretty problematic for most restaurants!). The other day we arrived earlier than usual, during breakfast menu. The staff were kind enough to make me something off-menu that I could eat, which I know is an enormous pain for a kitchen to do, and also made us chips at breakfast, which was the biggest kindness - Dad wouldn't have been able to understand why we couldn't have chips and would have been quite upset. It meant so much to us that you could do this. Barzura is a win all round. Exceptional food, wonderful ambience, and staff who really go above and beyond. Also, the coffee is incredible. Thanks so much. See...
Read moreI've been a Barzura regular for the past 15 years – and yes, that’s despite having a healthy (if embarrassing) fear of water and the beach! This iconic Coogee gem has consistently delivered warmth, flavour, and good vibes from day one.
The staff are the heart of Barzura. Always friendly, welcoming, and genuinely attentive – they make you feel like part of the family. There’s something special about a place where the team sticks around for years, and you can feel the positive workplace vibe in every interaction. It’s rare, and it shows.
Now, let’s talk food. My go-to dishes are: the Tomato, chilli & basil mussels – bold, aromatic, and utterly addictive. the Hotcakes with poached pear, honeycomb butter & maple syrup – aka Yum Town and Party in your mouth. Trust me, it’s a celebration on a plate.
And the bar? They nail the Negroni Spritz every time – 100% of the time.
Barzura isn’t just a restaurant – it’s a Coogee institution. Whether you're a beach lover or a beach avoider like me, it’s worth the visit. Every....
