First time back in the area after a while, so I looked up cafes with good ratings. 4.9 based on 600+ reviews should be a solid choice... one would think. This turned out to be a typical case of "am I crazy or is it everybody else?" The building complex where this cafe is situated looks new – maybe a few years old – so I don't think it's an old and new management situation here. The other explanation for this exceptionally high rating is either that the locals are mega biased or the owners have somehow cracked the Google review system. My personal cafe evaluations consider location/atmosphere, value, food, coffee, and service. While the location was pleasant and the staff were friendly and accomodating, the food fell short. The kitchen's creativity was lacking, and the quality was disappointing. The best of the four dishes we ordered were the fries. The avocado stack featured two slices of toasted sourdough with old avocado mash, making this "sandwich" unpleasantly wet. It was topped with medium-well poached eggs, a large cube of feta, halved cherry tomatoes, and garnished with the forever famous balsamic glaze. I didn’t finish it. The spicy cauliflower side was overly salty and tasted pre-made. The corn and zucchini fritters had an unappealing texture – a basic culinary error, as properly prepared zucchini fritters should be light and fluffy. You grate the zucchini, squeeze the water out as much as possible, and use very little flour and baking powder and an egg. And again, balsamic glaze was all over the plate. The coffee was acceptable, but nowhere near the standard of nearby cafes, particularly those in Marrickville. Overall, the experience -4.3- was not worth the time or money. It's a shame, as my list of truly excellent cafes remains...
