Maybe you guys are tired of always seeing bubbling Korean soup reels on my page. Or maybe you aren't. So here's a little writing post instead 😜. The truth is, I'm a little obsessed with Korean soups. Unapologetically. Sure, Korean BBQ and tteokbokki are cool, but it was the moment I had my first sip of a bubbling stew served in clay pot where I began completely spiralling into learning about K-cuisine. It's a soup. It's not like I hadn't had soup before. But why did it taste so nourishing? So comforting? So healing? This love heightened when I visited South Korea last year. We landed on a cold night, past 9pm, and immediately raced to the first open soup restaurant we could find. Ahhhhhhhhhhh. Immediate revitalisation. I've been on a mission to try as many different versions of Korean soup ever since. Some of my favourites have been tteokguk (rice cake soup, for the Korean New Year), miyeokguk (seaweed soup, for birthdays, shoutout @hangangbymamapark ) and ppeyodagwi haejangguk (spicy pork backbone 'hangover' cure soup). No special occasion on the last one, it's just great. Maybe above all else is a soup called sundaeguk (blood sausage soup). Oh man. My favourite sundaeguk was at a place called "Haejangkook.com" in Lidcombe. Was, because it's now closed. I looked long and hard to find another sundaeguk shop that had a similar taste and I've finally found one! Dae Ga Korean Restaurant in Newington is family run (parents and children - dad in kitchen, mum and daughter running the floor, son studying on a table in the corner type beat). Most of the flavour in their sundaeguk comes from its simmered pork bone base and the aromatic slaps of sliced perilla leaf which are added to the soup. So tasteful. I love the bounces of the sweet potato noodles in the blood sausage, the bitiness of the pig offal, and the way the soup burns your tongue. I love the extra comfort adding rice into the soup gives. I love it all! Their spicy beef soup with egg and mung bean sprouts is real nice too. So tell me guys, what's your favourite Korean soup? Expect to spend: ~ $20 📍Dae Ga Korean Restaurant, Newington

I regularly dine at Dae Ga Korean, and every visit reinforces why it’s one of my favorite spots. Run by a warm and welcoming husband-and-wife team, the food here is pure comfort—every dish feels homemade with absolute love. Of all the meals I’ve had, I now understand why so many recommend the seafood pancake—it’s truly outstanding. The ginseng chicken is another highlight, served in a generous portion with a broth that’s thick, rich, and easily the best I’ve ever had. A small yet thoughtful touch is the free water, served in frozen containers, making it extra refreshing. The restaurant always has a lively yet cozy atmosphere, often filled with families enjoying their meals together. If you’re after authentic and satisfying Korean food, I can’t recommend Dae Ga Korean enough. It’s a place I keep coming back to, and for good reason!

Had a satisfying lunch here. Will be back! Great service too. (5 stars) Update 25 nov 2023: used to love this place but things have changed unfortunately. Visited today, had to order at counter and prepay. The lady didnt even bother to walk over to say that. But some koreans could finish their meal then pay. The service was bad nowadays. The lady charged extra. Told her but she insisted for a while. All prices were clearly written!! When asking for additional side dishes (we were 3) she just replied with a rude "finished". We wont be back again. This place is now on our blacklist.

Not sure why this place isn’t busier because the food here is amazing! The seafood pancake? Easily one of the best I’ve ever hadif not the best. The lady at the counter let us know there’d be a bit of a wait for the seafood pancake since they had a few orders ahead of us, which I really appreciated. And let me tell you—it was so worth it!

We also got the beef bulgogi, spicy pork stir-fry, and beef soup, and every single dish was packed with flavour. Even my kids were all smiles and giving thumbs up! The food took about 30 minutes to arrive, but to be fair, we were starving by 1 PM, so maybe it just felt longer.

Either way, fantastic food at great prices—we’ll absolutely be coming back, and next time, we’re...
