I’m from the US and when I heard that we finally got a Five Guys I had to check it out and see how it stacked up against the restaurants back home and to hopefully scratch that itch for a nice greasy, quality burger.
It was basically the same as back home! Same fresh beef, same grease-spotted bag, same overflow of fries (or maybe I just got lucky). The unwritten rule at five guys (at least in the states) is that you never order a large fries because even with a medium size you end up with a large portion size scattered throughout your bag. Cajun seasoning FTW.
We also tried a milkshake, which I never tried at Five Guys before. It was really good and you can mix different flavours and additions - we did salted caramel, malt, and coffee. At almost $10 I probably wouldn’t get it again but it was a nice treat for the ride home.
The service was also great - it was packed on a Friday night and the the line was out the door but they kept things moving and there were a ton of people working. No dine in yet with COVID restrictions, but the wait wasn’t terrible even though it was busy. They also have soda refills.
Look, for people saying “it’s basically hungry jacks”… you’re kidding yourselves.
As far as it being expensive, I just checked a location from where I lived in the states and a cheeseburger costs $11 there which is something like $14.50 in $AUD, so it is a little more expensive on paper. However, the cost of doing business in ANZ is also more expensive, and they have a liquor license, so it doesn’t seem terribly unreasonable me. (From my experience living in Sydney for ~3 years so far, everything is expensive!)
I would not compare it to traditional fast food like Burger King/hungry jacks, maccas, kfc, etc. A more fair comparison would be something like Grill’d, as they are more expensive than the fast food chains mentioned above but the quality is better. A burger at Grill’d costs about ~$16.
Don’t listen to the whingers, try it for yourself.
Just be prepared to spend more than you would at maccas or hungry jacks; cost-wise and quality-wise it is more similar to something...
Read moreI've got to get out more. There are just so many amazing places out there to eat and five guys , as I discovered today is one of them. Located just outside the Penrith panthers league club amongst the other food outlets out front of the club. This first thing I noticed when we parked and got out of the car was the amazing smell of food coming from the restaurant. Upon entering, you are greeted by a large open-plan restaurant with indoor seating , from booths, tables and stools. There is no table service. You order at the counter and your ticket number will be called when your food is ready. This is an American chained restaurant and I was particularly excited to try an American hotdog. When you order, Wether it be a dog or a burger , you have to know that at that point , your burger is just a paddy in a bun and your hotdog is just a dog in a bun. You have to add on and customise your order. So for example, on my hotdog is added tomato sauce, mustard, bacon , cheese and raw onion. I did the same for my burger. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful in explaining everything to me. You can buy beer here, but for me the drinks menu highlight was the unlimited refills on softdrinks. Really great value. Next thing I organised before my order was read out, was a visit to the condiments bar. From salt and pepper to mayonnaise, tomato sauce and malted vinegar to dress your fries with , if you choose to do so. Got my order and was blown away by the food. The burger and dog were wrapped in aluminium foil, so if taking away it would be well insulated. The sausage in the hot dog was a kransky and was fabulous. I would 100 percent be back for that. Same goes with my hamburger, which I was dipping into the mayonnaise with every bite. I was actually craving the flavour again before I had even finished eating, I loved it that much. I highly recommend. Wheelchair accessible parking and entry Toilets. Takeaway or eat in Beer served here No drive thru Indoor and outdoor seating No table...
Read moreThe best way to describe the experience here is "its like wearing wet socks".
As everyone else has said the prices are exorbitant. I assume this is to cover the cost of the "free" toppings for the burgers and shakes. If you're picking and choosing your toppings, you are paying extra for nothing. I don't mind paying $20 for a burger, but it needs to match the price. This fell flat.
Burgers are usually juicy, so its natural that these burgers would also be juicy. The burgers have two meat buns, so it was extra juicy. Five Guys chose to wrap these juicy burgers in a single layer of foil and give it to you in a brown paper bag. As I mentioned, you are not allowed to dine in so you will need to carry these to the location of your choice. The paper bag was soaked. As was the area we put the bag on, in the car. The burger bun was also soaked and got soggy. The amount of tissues they give do not match the mess it makes. The toppings taste fresh so thats a plus.
The Chips, they use fresh potatoes sourced from Tasmania but still, I am baffled. Who on Earth designed the packaging for the chips?! They put the chips in a tall cup, and there is a lot of trapped heat in that cup. The chips that are under the top layer are basically soggy steamed potato sticks, because of all the trapped heat. Only the chips on top are good and still crispy.
The labelling for the order was bad. The drinks are not labeled. The burgers have numbers on them. You will need to look at your receipt, and match your burger number to the burger. Except, the description of the Burger is something like CB, BC, etc. I don't want to think too much for fast food.
Also as others have said the music is too loud. The order calling system is pretty bad, the server has to yell over the music to call for orders, there's no number sign.
It was not a pleasant experience, everything was so soggy. For 20 bucks surely you could afford standard packaging...
