Look for the yellow sawn-off shipping container with a bold red âCHICKENâ sign to find HillBillyâs. One side of the shopfront features a black and white poster for âVENDIâ with a model wearing a diamond necklace and the other promotes âAward-Winning Coffeeâ. But letâs get back to why Iâm here: their âSouthern style crispy chickenâ.
I opt for the Thigh Master Pack, which includes three thighs, chips and aioli and the 5 Crispy Chicken Wings. I ask for one thigh to be slightly spicy and it comes sprinked with red lightly spicy powder. Their portions are generous enough to satiate two hungry adults and a child, all for an affordable $36. âWe gave you an extra wing,â says the owner, Kat.
The batter is dotted with savoury spices, I munch into the thin layer to the juicy chicken. No grease lines my lips or fingers. Even after twenty minutes, the batter remains crisp and the chicken stays warm - this chicken would travel well as takeaway.
The wall on one side of the small space looks like youâve gone back in time, and is adorned with a ukulele, cowâs head with a bell around its neck, old scales and skateboard. On the other side, Star Wars memorabilia shares space with a diamond encrusted trainer in a display cabinet. Thereâs also a bright blue, hip hop plastic figurine with bling snaked around its neck advertising âVENDIâ. Next to this is a shiny large white touch screen with a card machine attached.
My exploration is interrupted by customers coming into the shop, whom Kat greets by name. âWe should franchise this place.â âWeâd love to be franchised and are trying to find people who mean it,â Kat responds.
After we finish our meal, I point to the touch screen and ask what it is. âIt dispenses diamonds. Itâs the first like it in the world. We got a patent for vending precious elements,ââ said Kat, taking out a tiny diamond in an acrylic case to show me. âYou can buy a 5pt GIA certified diamond here for $140. Weâre also hoping to sell these: itâs a 1g gold bullion.â
As we leave, our bellies full and a doggy bag in hand, itâs dark. The faint glow of the HillBillyâs logo shines from within. The shop is at the end of the row, with a small road beside it and a car park across the street.
Whether youâd like to treat yourself to a VENding-machine jewel or a cup of coffee, I would go again for their DIamond attraction: the grease-free crunchy...

If youâre looking for the real crispy FRIED chicken, this is it! They have a wide spread of options on their menu from simply fried chicken (original, mild, medium to spicy option) to burgers, special packs , sides and milkshakes! We love Onion rings and these are definitely home made and not one of those commercial made ones! Every ring of onions hugged with their batter which is just the right thickness and crispness !
We ordered the chicken thigh packs! Itâs was crunchy and nice and moist and juicy! We had it medium spice. Chips were ok but perhaps got a little soggy by the time we got home otherwise we reckon itâd be nice as your orders are made to order as there was a little wait but not a crazy long wait.
Ordered the chicken wings and again , CRISPy!!!! Yum but maybe bec the wings is a little smaller in size it was a tad dry but itâs was still yummy!
The sauces they have totally compliments their fried chicken! We got the Nashville and chilli honey and love it!!! Nashville has a tinch of sour/vinergarish and sweetness to it that cuts the richness of the fried chicken making you deep it with every bit of fried chicken and the chilli honey , just enough heat from the chilli and the sweetness of the honey makes you go back for more!
Got greedy and ordered desserts! Totally forgot! But they do Churros too! Itâs nice !
I love the atmosphere of the place as it was decorated with some older school figurines and it just reminds you of diner places back in the days before 2000s , nothing pretentious but old school welcoming . It probably sits comfortably 10 inside ? Otherwise thereâs a table outside that will sit a party of 3-5.
Overall, this is our new hunt if weâre feeling like a good fried chicken in...
Read moreOne of the best southern fried chickens in Sydney. Crispy, juicy and flavoursome! Highly recommend it and I would definitely return if I'm in the area.
Customer service was friendly and engaging and the food was cooked fresh and came out in a reasonable time frame. Very pleasant to chat with.
I had the mix pack in a combo with a chocolate shake, which would be enough for 2 people, or if you're a atty-fay like me, it's more than enough food. For the price you pay, the quality and portion size make it worth. If I was guessing, their shakes are around 750-800ml in size and I'd say it's in between a thick shake and a milkshake.
The chicken is really good. The crumb is crispy and has a good amount of flavour, plus you can add more flavour with their spicy seasoning. Chicken is well cooked and juicy, in my case, nothing was dry and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My favourite were the wings and surprisingly the breast stripes are really good, like a really tasty crispy strip.
Shoutout to the onion rings, made in house and fried to crispy perfection in the same crumb as the chicken.
Gravy is good, a nice thick consistency with good seasoning and as advertised, goes well with everything.
If you're planning to drive, there isn't any parking at the location. Either park at the pub across the road and cross the street, or there's a street directly behind, but you have to walk up a...
