TL;DR: omakase has changed (previous chef gone) and not at a level to retain the $130 price tag. Food isn’t bad but uninteresting. More like a nice neighbourhood Japanese restaurant trying to be high end but falling short. Look elsewhere for an omakase experience. Went here for a sushi omakase as it came highly recommended but what we got was different to what many previous diners have experienced and posted about. Their ‘omakase’ is now more a multi course menu with only minimal nigiri sushi and is not prepared to a $130 standard - in terms of skill as well as ingredients and service. After further research, I’ve discovered the previous chef moved on about a month ago. I wish I had known this earlier. When I booked I specifically asked for the sushi omakase and was told this was available so feeling a bit misled. They should have said they don’t do it anymore but have changed to a new course menu instead. The menu was overall quite uninteresting and prepared closer to a casual Japanese restaurant level e.g. the assorted appetiser plate had things like bland spinach with sesame seeds and tiny bits of chopped cabbage (it was more like a spread of basic banchan but in prettier bowls); sashimi/nigiri choices were nice but not wow; the dessert was a basic red bean mochi. Don’t expect to get that tuna belly/uni/ikura hand roll you’ve seen posted everywhere. Service could be improved but polite enough. Timing of courses was a bit off - sometimes a bit of a wait between courses and even though our meal started before other tables, the last few courses came later than theirs. The dining room also fills up with kitchen smells like fry oil and smoke.

The food was pretty good, but unfortunately, the service was extremely disappointing. I booked the table through the website and even noted that we were celebrating a birthday. From the moment we arrived, the service felt cold. One of the female staff came over to take our order, but her expression looked unhappy. When we said we were fine with just tap water, she immediately turned around and walked away, no acknowledgment at all. I was left thinking, “Excuse me??” What made it worse was seeing how differently she treated other tables. She happily refilled their water without being asked, but completely ignored us. We had to ask for our water to be topped up properly. After our meal, we asked for the birthday cake I had previously handed to the staff to be brought out. Instead of bringing it, she asked if we wanted to order dessert. I told her, “No thank you, we have a cake.” Again, she just turned around and left without a word. Later, when we asked a staff member to take a photo for us, he didn’t say a single word either. I asked him to wait a moment so I could sit close to my boyfriend. He took the photo, handed back the phone without saying anything, and looked unhappy the whole time. It honestly felt like we were being treated as an inconvenience rather than welcomed guests. Everyone else around us got smiles and friendly service, while we were barely acknowledged. We came to celebrate a birthday, and instead, we left feeling like we were being judged or like we owed them money. Really disappointed with the service. The food might be good, but the experience overall was spoiled.

My rating is 4.5*. It is close to 5 but for a few minor issues. First of all, the food is fab. While the menu might read like a who's who of popular Japanese food, you can really tell the difference when they arrive at your table. I would say all our dishes are superb. The sashimi is super fresh and the combination is thoughtful and authentic rather than just the usual 3 fish combo. Ditto the tempura. The serving is generous, the batter is light and the dish is not oily at all. The Udon broth is so flavourful. To be honest, I can't fault any of the dishes we sampled. The service is very good in general. Water glasses were topped up regularly and plates swapped out. This is not typical for a Japanese restaurant in the suburbs. The only thing we noticed is the staff did get stressed as the night progresses and the room is filled to the brim. Little mistakes start to creep in. Everything is sorted quickly but it is a little unexpected. Speaking of a full house, the room is a typical modern design with lots of wood and glass so the noise level increases over time. Great for family/friends gatherings but not exactly a place for a quiet romantic evening. Booking essential. Highly recommend!

Maybe omakase was good according to my friend’s experience and since they recommended we decided to try it out since wife and I love to eat traditional 江戶前壽司 sushi but unfortunately we couldn’t book omakase tonight so we had al carte instead. We ordered 24pieces sushi platter, miso grilled Bar cod and tempura prawns. First the nigiri sushi we had was totally not up to normal standard don’t even mention authentic as it’s restaurant name suggests! There was no wasabi under the fish also not provided on the platter ! They try to use red rice vinegar which was good but the rice was too hard could be due to air cooled for too long and was too loose when it was wrap under the piece of seafood, almost all sushi rice start to crumble away when tried to pick up with chopsticks ( my wife and I both Chinese we know how to our chopsticks in case you might wonder!) rice should be at body temp around 37-38 degrees and the rice and fish should almost all chew away in your mouth together but you can say tonight’s sushi was worse than sushi train! The Grill cod was nice but the tempura prawn was frozen curled up prawns dip into batter then fried served in a tapas bowl. Not authentic at all tempura prawn should be straight with bit of tail and not served in a tapas bowl like some kind of pub food!!

When commented to the manager/maybe owner he did apologise but his reasoning was omakase is made by a better chef in a much higher standard basically telling us we are getting what we pay for ! However from all of our experience of eating sushi in many many occasions in Australia and in Japan which we visit yearly, that we know a bit about sushi and omakase means chef’s recommendation it doesn’t mean when you pick your own dish you deserve to be served with incomplete sushi and when you call your self an authentic Japanese restaurant to be serving low quality sushi and tempura that look like tapas!

Definitely not a good experience, There are many other way better sushi place price above and below what they...
