Kyushu used to be one of my favourite Japanese restaurants, but tonight was so disappointing. Our order didn’t go through, so we waited 30 mins even for drinks. When the food finally came, the tempura had a grey hair or bristle fried in it.

The young staff tried their best, but the older staff member at the cashier made it worse. Her first reaction, in a very annoyed tone, was: “oh… should I ask the chef to fry the tempura again?” We had already come to her at the cashier to pay and leave—why would we want to wait longer just for a piece of capsicum tempura?

Even worse, instead of acknowledging the delay or the hygiene issue, she looked annoyed when I spoke to her in Japanese, and eventually just said, “ok we give you the Coke for free.” That was it. No apology, no recognition, no attempt to make things right.

The younger staff were respectful and trying hard—I want to acknowledge that. But the older staff member’s attitude was cold and dismissive, and it left us feeling unwelcome in a place we had once loved.

It’s painful to say goodbye to a place we once loved, but respect matters as much as food. We won’t be...

This was our family's favourite go-to for over 30 years. The standard of service of late is marred by the rudest and most dismissive female manager whose manner and attitude leaves much to be desired. Upon discovering an undercooked piece of chicken, which is unusual in all the time we have dined, we were shocked at the lack of concern by said manager with no attempt to offer an apology or attempts to ensure we remain loyal customers or have the slightest concern about the risks of eating undercooked chicken. Instead we were told to visit a medical centre and provide a medical certificate before they would acknowledge the chef might have undercooked the piece of chicken that remained. Service is also appalling - 1 hour wait for what should have been an entre, served last - again no apology offered. What was once a consistently great restaurant is now a 'hit and miss' with the quality of cook made worse by a dreadful manager at front of house,. Not surprised at the number of negative reviews, notably the female manager who needs to go to...

I've been a loyal customer of this gem for over 20 years, always coming back for the unbeatable teriyaki chicken and sashimi that rivals the freshness of Tokyo. In all that time, the staff have always been top-notch—attentive, friendly, and polite. But alas, last week I encountered the restaurant’s newest addition: a gentleman whose demeanor makes the sashimi feel warm by comparison.

He was as welcoming as a Monday morning and spoke to customers in a tone so plain I could have mistaken him for reading a dictionary aloud. His words, delivered as though they were laced with gold, were in short supply, leaving me wondering if he charged by the syllable. It was as if serving tables was a hobby he deeply regretted choosing.

While the rest of the team was their usual stellar selves, this particular individual soured the experience. Until he’s found a calling that brings him more joy (and preferably far away from the restaurant industry), I’ll be taking my business—and my love for teriyaki...

This is by far one of the most unique casual Japanese restaurants I’ve ever been to in Sydney. You either love it, or hate it, but I love it. Their tonkatsu is different to every other Japanese restaurant I know of in Sydney, from Dopa to Ichiban boshi, to Yayoi and beyond. The meat is dry, but not in a bad way. Like in a unique style as if it were intentional that complements the tonkatsu sauce on the side so it doesn’t overwhelm you. The gyoza is fully deep fried, with a completely nonstandard filling and no broth. And no it doesn’t have to be prawn filling either, but pork instead. It’s like it’s breaking the rules set for traditional Japanese dishes most other restaurants attempt to follow exactly, but in a way that seems tasteful. Can’t tell if this is just me, but considering am the restaurant is generally completely full, I guess I’m not the only one that enjoys this place so give it a try?

Awesome service, really accommodating especially for a table of ten people! They were all really friendly and explained things well; very kind. The food is great, decently quality sashimi, and the meat with the sukiyaki was wonderful. They also loaded up on portion sizes which was a scrumptious surprise! The teriyaki chicken was ironically one of the best I've ever had, which I was surprised by! The katsu pork and squid was also really good. Would come again! Forgot take pictures lol. Here is a picture of the bottles which look like bottles I'd find on a pirate ship (awesome).
