If it wasn't situated in a food court, I probably would have been convinced that this was a local mexican restaurant somewhere in the burbs or within a pub. Max Mex in Homebush was brightly lit up with decorations not worthy of the food court. I haven't been to Max Mex before so I had no expectations.
Spice up your life (and meal) with the hot sauce. It's a cut above the "hot" sauce which I thought was mild so go nuts if you are a fan of spice. I used a little bit of hot sauce in the chicken quesadilla ($10.90) that came with a bit of salsa, hot sauce (which was mild) and cream. It was a nice lunch, probably on par with Guzmez Y Guzman, another mexican chain. You can't really go wrong with toasted tortillas, cheese, chicken and sauces. Yum. I love the El Loco version too. See my blog here
The three hard tacos of steak, chicken and chorizo ($9.90) were not bad with avocado ($2 extra). The quesadilla was much more tasty. The mexican cola tasted like a pepsi but I had to try it out of curiousity.
Prices: $10 to 12 for mains

Read moreI love Madmex and its food, however DFO branch is a disappointment when it comes to service and portion size. I always order naked borritto regular size+ guac and i have never ever seen a smaller portion than the one in DFO branch! I was being served by a lady, than a man took over from her and he started putting the ingredients for me. He put lettuce as if he was putting salt, he than added hint of pico degalo. I than said please put some lettuce, he replied we already put lettuce! I told him the borritto is almost empty my friend, your spoon for pico degalo is almost a teaspoon! He rudely replied, we use spoon size that people can chew! Honestly i hope he is not the owner as he is damaging the Madmex brand reputation! Madmex franchise needs to give this guy a warning!
I am used to Madmex awesome food and friendly service in all their branches! However Madmex DFO branch is not...
Read moreMad Mex is a pretty standard mexican chain. To confess, though, I'm not really a fan. It has a pretty good mexican atmosphere, including the serving of mexican soft drinks, and beers and spirits are available, which is not usually the case in a fast food restaurant.
But the food is a bit of a let-down for me. While the salads appear fresh, the meat is cold. I really expect my mexican food to be hot - or at least warm. The hot sauce is also pretty underwhelming. I'm a fan of spicy food, but I don't have some ridiculous tolerance to spice, yet I found their hottest sauce quite mild. They do remedy this by having hotter sauces on the table though.
I had the hard shell tacos, which were assembled pretty clumsily. My gf had the quesdillas - much more satisfying.
In short - its ok. There is better mexican...
