20/9/24 - 5 stars This has gotta be one of the best hidden gems in Sydney. Genuine, flavourful and generously sized meals at only $17/dish is a rare find in Sydney these days, especially in the inner west. As you'd expect from a no frills / hawker style eatery, decorations and table service are kept to a minimum which I don't mind. Food is ordered and picked up at the counter. If I was to point out one thing I don't like, all dishes are served in disposable containers regardless of takeaway or not. Char kway teow Flavour: SS, 9/10. Definitely the most wok hei I've had so far which was nice. Flavours were well balanced but maybe a little mild? Texture: SS+, 9.5/10. No complaints. Noodles were soft and a bit chewy but complimented by the crunchy bean sprouts and pieces of meat/prawn. Value: SS, 9/10. $16.7. Enough said Chicken & prawn laksa Flavour: SS, 9/10. Really aromatic and coconutty but could have been a little spicier? Texture: S+, 8.5/10. Rich but still soupy. Did get a little heavy towards the end Toppings: SS, 9/10. Nice mix and well cooked Value: SS, 9/10. $16.7

Update: Second visit, tried the seafood laksa ($16.5). Too much coconut milk this time, ‘watering’ down the depth of the broth. 2 pieces of squid which were not chewable at all - could barely bite through it. Probably the best time to have something like this with this rainy weather. Definitely made it more satisfying! Same vibe as the one in the CBD though a little smaller. No table service - order up front, find a table, get called up, pick your food. Thought that might’ve changed when they opened the Ashfield branch. Had the skinless chicken and king prawn laksa ($16.5). Broth was great as expected. Frozen prawns which was also expected as per the CBD branch. Chicken was a little bit on the tough side. Would’ve been great if the tofu puffs were less dense to soak up more of that broth like how it usually is in Malaysia! Tip: park at Ashfield mall

I love their food and yes it's like a food court. Awesome food and service with a smile.

This owners have been around for many years and always had a long queue every places they owned. From a small restaurant arcade opposite to MLC, they moved to a few doors down to a huge basement for many years until the buiding got sold then to Hunter Street. And they also had several restaurants in the cit y at one time, they were the happy days for me. All had long queue for their famous harmee and Laksa.

Unfortunately, they now only has 2 restaurants Ashfield and circular quay. Hunter St building is now for development.

I don't think I have ever had a bad meal in the 28 years I found them, from a small arcade opposite to MLC.

My favourite are harmee, Laksa and horfun. The finest in town.

If there is a queue, wait for it, it is worth the wait or order takeaway if you do not wish to wait.

I also love that they are in Ashfield, there is parking outside or nearby.

I also love the fact that they are seeing me getting older and I get to see their children with their own families running the restaurants.

I highly recommend to try out their Laksa and Harmee. Harmee is only on weekends, has a strong prawn flavour with pork, egg, prawns and vegie toppings....

They have been incredibly smart in moving their Lime street operation to Ashfield. The place is bustling in a way that Lime street never was and is reminiscent of how busy Hunter st gets. In addition they must be making a killing out of the takeaway.

In terms of the Laksa, I have always felt that Lime street was under-seasoned compared to Hunter st. And it's the case in Ashfield as well. It's still the best Laksa in Sydney, but just a little more salt would be great.

Finally, the table situation needs to be sorted out. In the city, because it's a lunch crowd people order first before finding a seat as they know they can always find one due to the high turnover. When I went, there were single diners taking up a 4 seat tables and half the restaurant was sitting there with no food on the table. A little bit of organisation and you could turnover tables...
