First Impression: Great hidden cafe / bar in York Lane. Diminutive size hides the giant potential and ability for this place to deliver coffee, food, drinks and service. Cliche - but very 'Melbourne'.
Look & Feel: Owner is a keen cyclist (but still manages to be a nice guy), which you can tell by the way the walls are adorned. Also some cool vinyl and graffiti to go with the hanging bike and helmets. Seating outdoors available.
Quality & Taste: Coffee is great ($3.50)(Golden Cobra) and food looks phenomenal. Tapas and weekday specials at night with an interesting menu (not yet sampled, prices range from $10 - $15). Home-made cookies and baked goods are hard to resist ($3 - $4)
Hip Pain: Standard city prices, coffee a little on the high side.
Must Have: Lunch specials are high quality fare. Saw someone with a Hot Choc (the type with real chocolate you pour out) and orange peel / zest (think Jaffa) which would be great during these...

If you could drink the atmosphere of this place, it would taste amazing. The is certainly a good vibe you get sitting in this alley cafe. The coffee wasn't amazaballs but niether was it a predictable industrial mass produced coffee (so bonus points are on offer). Certainly this coffee was roasted a little too dark for my liking, but as a mac it made much more sense.
THis place also gets bonus points for its breakfast menu. Having a breakfast with the lot ($17) next to a shushuka ($12) makes for an interested range of options.

Read moreAn expresso cafe by day and bar at night, York Lane gives off a very Melbournian vibe. The handwritten menu adds to the casual atmosphere of the venue, where almost all the material are recycled and repurposed. Airline food trolleys are used as shelves, old English wardrobes for the wall lining and milk crates as seats. Drinks are limited to wine, beer, cider and whatever spirits are stocked at the bar; food is simple and tapas style. The Haloumi & Pea Fritters with Tzatziki failed to impress at all, the fritters were burnt and lacked flavour, however the Duck Pancakes with Hoisin Sauce was nice. A good little spot to grab a coffee during the day or a quick...
