"The Brewery". Restaurant, and Function centre, is located in the former city post office (circa 1897). A heritage land mark in the CBD, it incorporates the only functional clock tower in Townsville. Inside, dark tones predominate, creating an elegant, moody atmosphere, highlighted by a pale tongue and groove ceiling hung with fabulous art deco lamps. Patchwork style art deco glass windows, and a huge decorative gilt mirror, add further interest. Half the restaurant has large comfortable booth seats and tables, the other half, stylish wooden tables and chairs, and delicate, filmy curtains separate the two areas. One high stretch of wall has been pared back to the original brickwork revealing the Brewery's historic past, and a large window allows views into the actual brewery. A beautiful horse-shoe shaped alcove with soft lamps and a magnificent chandelier is tucked away at the rear. We tasted seven of the brewery's boutique beers, Townsville bitter premium,Townsville lager, Bandito loco Mexican lager, Belgium blond wit bier, Digger's golden ale, Ned's red ale, and a Flannigan's dry Irish stout, all noteworthy, accompanied by a dozen "Moulting Bay" Tasmanian oysters, au naturale. Our mains were, Eye fillet (250g) Kimberley red beef, grain fed, (Moranbar Queensland), served with pan fried prawns, cafe de paris butter, roasted vegetables, and a Pan seared Atlantic Salmon on pumpkin gallete with grilled field mushrooms, green beans, and salsa verde. All beautifully prepared and presented and thoroughly enjoyed. Espresso and hazelnut profiteroles with chocolate sauce and an individual caramelised lemon tart with double cream, completed our dinner, finishing with a well made coffee. A very enjoyable evening. Upstairs, a very large function room is available for, weddings, conferences, etc.The furnishings and light fittings...
Read moreBeautiful building, good atmosphere and friendly staff. Would visit again for that. Food was a big let down for our whole table of 6. No staff to show us to our booked table on arrival, and somebody was at our table when we showed ourselves in. About an hour wait on food (bar staff did tell us when we ordered, but not many options when you've booked). Pizza very unappealing... I had the Pumpkin and my friend had the BBQ beef. Mine had beyond a huge amount of cheese (each slice had what one would expect on a whole pizza) and LOADED with raw garlic, and barely any actual toppings. (Once you try to scrape some cheese off, you're basically left with overbaring garlic bread). Others at the table tried it and also agreed it was unpleasant. My friend ate half her pizza because it had too much cheese and drowned in BBQ sauce. Bubble and squeak burger looked sad (and friend didn't enjoy), and friend said the fish was tough. Friends that had the chicken parmigiana and the schnitzel said it was good. Sweet potato fries were great! I would go again though, good atmosphere and booths are fun for small groups. But I'll try a different meal, and hope that the kitchen consider this feedback on the meals we had....
