The strong performance of Kermond's was, however, the real surprise. Especially as Lava Street, Warrnambool, is hardly a high-traffic location - unless you are comparing it to the Oodnadatta Track. Still, they collected more nominations than the next two country places (the Igloo Roadhouse in Buxton and Stella's at Seymour) combined and came second only to Danny's. Kermond’s Hamburgers
Restaurant/cafe
For 60 years, five generations of the Kermond family have worked in this bustling genuine retro shop, producing that wonderful old-fashioned variety of hamburger you thought had long gone. What started in a caravan on the foreshore in 1949 is now a Victorian institution, considered among the most popular tourist attractions in the state. On the international scene, a Kermond’s cheeseburger is considered the ninth best hamburger in the world. On a busy day, 35 casual and six full-time staff produce 50 dozen burgers, cooking everything to order from scratch. And the secret ingredient: premium Western District steak, minced and blended to a specific recipe from local Lucas’ Butchers, who have been supplying the beef since day one – around 12 000 kilograms a year.

I remember the childhood treat of their burgers, a couple of decades later the joy hasn't diminished. A trip to Warrnambool is not complete without a visit to Kermond's.
There simply is a unique taste to these burgers, that you can't put you finger on. I cannot tell you how many times I've thought about what I would do to get my hands on their recipe.
The decor is the same as it was when I was a kid, and there is no reason to update. It is a quaint trip into the past world of hospitality. The burgers are large, and exploding with flavour. Burgers are cooked in front of you, and the staff are always friendly an attentive. Don't be surprised to see generations of family members enjoying what has become a family tradition for many.
I once tried the chill burger, thinking that it would be chill sauce. It was packed with a massive amount of freshly cooked chill. I wouldn't try that again.

When you step inside, you get the old school burger shop experience. Burgers like this are in their own class. It was so tasty, layered well, didn’t get soggy and was super large. Definitely go for the lot! A feel good meal.
The dim sims and chips could’ve had more crunch, they went soggy pretty quick. Potato cake was on point...
