Our experience at the wangarratta RSL was incredibly disappointing and concerning. First and foremost, our dinner was below average and dry. We were seated with a high chair that was already set up, which turned out to be a hazard. After finishing our meal, when we unclipped our baby from the chair, the table snapped off because it hadn't been set up correctly by the staff. Our baby fell and hit her head straight on the corner of the table due to this negligence.
Despite the loud noise and obvious distress from the three of us, not one staff member came to check on us and assist. we had to go notify them, they denied that the chair was pre-made, despite our assurances. The manager finally appeared but offered no first aid or even ice for our clearly injured child. She now has a black eye and bruised cheekbone. Instead, they blamed us for the incident, stating it was our fault for the chair breaking, which caused our baby to fall.
We requested to speak with the manager again and asked for a refund and a sincere apology, The manager questioned whether we preferred cash or card for the refund, we said cash was fine. She dissapeared for 15 minutes once again not offering any assistance with ice or first aid. We then repeatedly showed or the visible damage to the high chair that caused it to snapped and she repeatedly said it wasnt her fault. since no assistance was given i scooped my hand in to the wine glass that had some left over ice. the manager once again returned and i said what the hell?? its been ten minutes get us some ice. she stood there like a dear in headlights. so I had to rush to get ice myself while the manager attempted to appear helpful by beating me to the bar.
After waiting around for 10 minutes, the manager returned and continued to blame us, eventually stating that a refund couldn't be offered since there was no issue with the food. There was no attempt at compensation or genuine concern for our child's welfare. They wanted to take down our details, but it seemed pointless as they showed little intention of addressing our concerns.
Throughout the ordeal, we remained calm and polite, but our frustration grew as the staff displayed a shocking lack of care and responsibility. It was particularly disheartening to witness the manager, Maarit, shift blame onto a young staff member rather than taking responsibility herself.
In conclusion, the service at RSL was appalling, and we are deeply disappointed by the entire experience. We will certainly be following up on this matter further.

Read moreWent to this venue for an afternoon drink and a quick play on pokies with my partner. After signing in we entered the gaming room. Quickly approached by a staff member who bluntly requested our sign in tickets. Went to the bar to get a drink and got redirected to a different bar. Apparently this bar doesn't have Jack Daniels as a free pour . Proceeded to play pokie and put a reserve sign on a machine so as to go to rest room. Before even walking away was questioned by same blunt staff member about why i put the reserve sign on. After being here for a short time i asked said staff member to check time limit on a different machine. Staff member didn't check play time and just told me it has money on it. It was $1.15. Minutes later someone who appeared to be local was granted access to the machine. I continued to play my original machine choice and was quickly accused of banging machine buttons to loudly. I asked were they always this rude to out of town patrons and a different person rapidly entered the gaming room claiming she could hear me slapping the machine from her office and in her words (I'm not having it and we are not rude). Clearly the staff at this joint ( i call it a joint because it's not a venue)lack training and have an obvious aversion to non locals. If i could give no stars in my review that would be appropriate. Firstly, I’ve been coming here for years because the food is great, and I’ll continue to come for that reason. If the food wasn’t so good I’d happily give this place negative stars.
The policies and reception are ridiculous. Firstly, entering the place is as difficult as going through airport security. The staff make you feel guilty for wanting to enter the building and make it feel as if you’ve made their day harder by doing so.
Today I arrived at 5:30 pm (when the kitchen opens) with no booking. They said we can enter but not order until 7pm as it’ll be too busy for the kitchen. There was literally about five people sitting inside and one outside. The person advised there’s seats available but we can’t order.
I offered that we could walk immediately to the counter and order prior to even sitting down, as there would be none, or a couple of orders at that time. I was told no and said.
Another time my wife forgot her card, and they made her feel like a criminal.
To top it off I’m ex Army, something I’ve never raised during these interactions as I don’t feel it necessary, but they make me not feel welcome and I can’t imagine how others feel.
