Visiting Albany with my partner and we decided to try this quaint looking little bakery on a whim. Bad decision and one of several we made during our short visit to "Kinjarling" or "Whale Town" as I prefer to call it. Anyway, our experience was problematic in a number of respects:
There are no prices displayed for ANY pastries. If there was any such information it must have been one that only a hardcore "Where's Wally" player could spot because we looked, hard, and saw nothing. Colour me cynical but I suspect the decision not to inform ravenous punters about the financial pain they are about to endure the moment they swipe their card or smartphone is deliberate: see 2.
Incredibly expensive. We bought 2 small pastries and 2 take away coffees and almost fell over when the lady hunched over the till announced "that's $30". $30! Sure, we are all becoming numb to this neverending inflationary cycle but to describe this as a rip off would be far too kind - this felt like robbery. Albany Police can expect a call.
Rudeness. Not only are no prices displayed, there is also no menu and no labels on ANY of the pastries. So you are forced to play a game of Bakery Guess Who. Sure, I can easily recognise a plain croissant but if you are too lazy to use a chalkboard menu or stick a few labels on your exotic pastry menangerie of honey kouign-amann's & caramel glazed sticky fig scrolls then you better cheerfully field questions from curious customers when they ask you what's what. Not huff, smirk and wheeze "well, huh, what ones don't you know?". Like, if I'm going to be financially fingered I at least want a pleasant customer service experience.
The quality does not stack up: to the hype, to the pricing, to any reasonable bakery standard. The coffee was quite good. The pastries however were bland, lacked freshness and were just "OK". That's not good enough for a merchant which markets itself as a "viennoiserie" and prices everything at the far premium end of the scale.
This one is a pain in the...
Read moreBred Co has a vibe all its own — warm, welcoming, and always buzzing with locals in the know. I’ve been buying and enjoying their incredible bread for over 10 years — first at the Albany Markets, then at their bakehouse in the Business Centre, and now at their buzzing, artisan bakery at the top of town. There is truly no other bakery in the region like it.
I just had to hop on and give them a shoutout because I’ve seen a few negative posts recently and honestly — they feel fake or completely off the mark. This place is the real deal.
This is true farm-to-table food. They source local organic grain, mill it in-house, and craft the most delicious sourdough loaves you’ll find anywhere. There’s so much to choose from: wholemeal, rye, fruit loaf, baguette, high-top, even a gluten-free option.
And then — the croissants. Their viennoiserie (croissants, danishes, and other pastries) are made entirely from scratch, right here in Albany — something most people don’t realise. Everyone else buys them in frozen or freighted down, unless they’re smart enough to get them wholesale from Bred Co. These are next level — buttery, flaky, and always seasonal. No tinned fruit in sight! My darling 82-year-old mother lives for her delivery of almond croissants and the latest sweet (or savoury) Danish, always paired with a perfect extra-hot latte.
If you’re after lunch, their sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls and pies are also made fresh and follow the seasons — simple, thoughtful, and full of flavour.
The coffee is consistently excellent, and the vibe is always relaxed and inviting. The only downside? If you turn up too late, your favourites might already be sold out. But honestly, that’s just proof of how loved...
Read moreBeing away from Germany for almost 6 weeks, this is the first time I have had the chance to get some „real“ bread into my hands. Same applies for their Croissants- they taste like in France, ok, almost, not as greasy - which is even way better. Prices are high, indeed. But the quality and taste of the food are to my observations absolutely worth it. As I was not able to find a vegetarian option suitable, the (supposedly) shop owner offered me to stuff a fresh made one, which I luckily bought into. This „sandwich“ was one of the best I have ever eaten! Sliced between some German-style whole grain grey bread, the cheese was accompanied by a creative and delicious mix of humus, salads and a decent sauce.
Their secret is their mill next door - on display from the shop,. The Austrian original obviously allows them to grind the flour in the necessary dimensions, and this is what almost all other bakeries lack. Accordingly, they are equipped with the precious ingredients to come up with a variety of baking goods, which hold every comparison with European equivalents.
The Coffee - in a nutshell, it perfectly matched the great bread. The nicely tattooed and charming Barista created a tasteful blend and added a nice layer of oat milk. She was exceptionally friendly and took great care of cleanliness and temperature management of the hot drinks without generating any waiting times, even though the shop was pretty busy.
They offer to serve the hot beverage into nice porcelain cups, environmentally friendly.
Unfortunately, we had to continue our travel, so I could not spend a second visit to this treasure box. When I cross Albany the next time, I am eagerly looking forward to enjoying the Bred...
