Long time customer (our go-to f&c for roughly 8 years) ... this place is slowly dying a very sad death - it used to be great - but certainly not these days.
I feel for the owner - as he has been running it for sooo long ...
but sadly, the food isn't like it used to be ... nor the quality of staff that he employs these days (think his kids used to work in shop awhile back?).
[EDIT SEPT 2023] : again poor form. just as walked into store (phone order), they gave our order to someone else ... Apparently his name was Steven ... yeah not even close to my name except for the S.
Atleast other guy got a good deal, just hope he didn't pay the extra price ... as his was only meant to be 1 wrapped parcel, not a whole box full !!!
We also specifically asked for aussie basket + other items to be wrapped separately ... as 1 person wanted extra salt added. YET - this didn't happen (all wrapped together) +++ no extra salt added :(
[EDIT 2023] : poor form tonight. Spring roll wasn't what we were used to from buying from here. So we called to find out what was going on. Girl on phone was rude to us. Spoke to owner, he said they haven't been able to source "marathon spring rolls" due to floods ... Instead they had substituted it for a vegetarian spring roll version. Would've been nice if they'd told us when placing order.
[EDIT 2021] : They are back up to the same great standard i remember from years ago. Have upgraded my rating to 5 stars.
Also their scallops have the roe on - something that sets this place apart from your "average" fish and chips.
Parking always used to be an issue, but currently there is heaps due to sizzler closing.
[EDIT 2019] : Have noticed the quality has slipped compared to where it was even 12 months ago (unsure exact reason, as it is still the same friendly staff - maybe they are more "under...
Read moreBest fish and chips in the area. I remember when they opened (in the early 90's?). Used to get chips every now and again in the afternoon after school. I spent many years out of Perth, and was pleasantly surprised to find that they're still there when I returned a few years ago. It's always nice to see a small, family run business that has kept going through the years. I've seen other take always come and go, but Kiwi F&C is STILL here.
YES, this shop is extremely busy, I've never been in there and not seen at least ten or more other customers come through the door, many of them regulars. But again, that's a good sign that it's popular, and people only come back time and again if they like the food. I've never placed a phone order, so can't speak to that experience, and I've always got in there early (before 5, at least). People have complaints about the time taken...which would you rather, something that's cooked fresh while you wait, or something that's been sitting waiting for an hour? These things take time!
I've never had anything under or overcooked, and I've never had the staff be rude to me (but some people aren't as polite as me when dealing with staff...they're people too, remember!), even if I'm indecisive about what I want. The pinball/arcade machines give it a nice retro feel (always fun to pop in some coins and play a game while you're waiting), and it's nice to see a place that focuses solely on fish, chips and seafood and doesn't over complicate the menu with burgers and other things. That's what makes it a fish and chip shop. The Kiwi snack products and drinks are also...
Read moreBest fish and chip experience. The freshest most delicious fish and chips I have had in perth. We called in our order and a mere 15 minutes later we picked up our food piping hot fresh out of the fryer goodness. Now here is where my real recommendation begins, stuck for a date night idea? Uber Eats drivers starting to worry about your health? Pretend it’s 1999 and go analog.
Glide in to this old school slice of heaven and place you order. Don’t forget to bring some change with you to play on not one but TWO classic pinball machines for the 15 minutes it takes the magical deep fried deliciousness to be prepared. Buy yourself a traditional NZ beverage to enjoy, have a great time until they call out your order. When you pick it up don’t bother taking a photo for the gram #food because it’s fish and chips wrapped in the same white paper of our youth and is not meant to be an artistic expression of the chef’s talent. Take it home and enjoy with your partner or better yet eat it all yourself watching Netflix. On the counter you will find a good old fashioned inkjet printed menu to take home with a branded fridge magnet. So you never forget your special day.
Phone use: 0. Human contact: 1 person. Social anxiety: minimal. It’s a small place with maybe 6 chairs for other waiting clients...
