Been looking forward to this for a while and overall was just disappointed. Positives were the beers I found nice enough (nothing very new but generally solid), the band was fantastic (third wheel), and the layout and venue are both great. So credit where it's due. The food was alright for some of us, but for me the pork was completely dry and actually was inedible. I pushed through half just to try eat some food and fill up but genuinely couldn't finish the rest, it didn't taste bad it was just that dry it was inedible. The service was the main issue, we booked well in advance and were seated in the front garden, waiters would come past at best every 20 minutes and even then ignore all the patrons craning to get their attention. In order to just get a drink with dinner we had to interrupt and call over 3 separate waitstaff, the first two acknowledged, walked off, and nothing happened. The final one did but only after doing other clean ups and putting stuff away to come back to us later regardless of us waiting for well over half an hour at that point. This continued the whole night, having to remind people how to make the first cocktail on the list they have, and always having to be chasing people down for any service. It is my understanding this looked like it could have been a language barrier instead of incompetence here so if I can offer advice, the English speaking and competent waitstaff should not be doing any cleaning or busboy work. The other waitstaff were completely incompetent and knocked this place from a decent experience with a bad meal to something I will recommend against visiting strongly. With prices in the range of fine dining, strong service is essential and it did not exist, if work is hard to find, just let the ones who can handle service just do that and let the others clean and deliver food etc. I was left with the impression they use the matsos name to charge exorbitant prices and get crowds without having to rely on decent service or food. Pity, we were looking forward to this, and it just fell so far flat. If the service was improved I'd rate 4 stars, just...
Read moreI visited with a family group on 29.07 - visiting from Melbourne for a week and booked dinner based on a number of recommendations from friends. First of all, the service was fine. It’s so clear that the staffing profile is 100% transitory, so you kind of expect staff to not be familiar with the product or alternatives. Second, both myself and my husband are vegetarian. We were expecting a limited range of options, so arrived with an open mind. We ordered 2 x chickpea salads with a side of roast kipfler potatoes. The waitress came back to our table after we ordered to let us know that there was - 45 minute wait. Ok…we were happy to wait. After moving inside (on account of the brisk winds that were picking up), we continued to wait for the food with no service or requests for additional items. When our salads finally arrived, the lettuce on both had not been cut properly and were both full of dirt and black grit. As a result we had to send the salads back, as they were inedible. The nice waitress offered an alternative, but as it was the only vegetarian option on the menu, there were no other options. The kipfler potatoes arrived with bacon (even though we had not ordered it), so was taken away and replaced. The replaced potatoes tasted like old oil and smelled like they had been dragged across the floor. They were also sent back. Almost 2 hours after we arrived, we left, hungry and extremely disappointed with the food and the experience. Now, I fully expect that there aren’t always many vegetarian options, but, at a minimum, the food should be well prepared and edible. Neither was the case here. I do not recommend this alleged Broome institution, but if you are vegetarian, there are many other more generous options...
Read moreThe beer garden, location, and overall atmosphere of this venue are undeniably excellent. Nestled close to the beach, it's a beautiful spot to unwind with a drink in hand. The service was warm and attentive throughout our visit, adding to the relaxed and welcoming vibe.
However, the food offering doesn’t quite live up to the surroundings—particularly when you consider the price point. Broome has a growing food scene, and there are several other venues offering more compelling value and flavour.
I ordered the crunchy spiced chickpea salad with added chicken. While the chicken was nicely marinated and cooked well, the portion size felt modest. The salad itself was fresh and generously sized, but fell short of its name—there was little to no crunch, and it lacked any discernible spice. If the chickpeas were intended to be toasted or roasted for texture, that element was missed entirely.
Additionally, the gem lettuce was served as large halved pieces, which made it awkward to eat. For a better experience, the leaves should be separated, or the halves roasted to soften the texture.
My partner chose the chicken burger, which unfortunately arrived overcooked and dry. The chips, which came at a $15 price tag, were slightly underdone and lacked seasoning—disappointing given the cost. On a brighter note, the drinks were a highlight. Both the ginger beers and the cocktails were well-crafted and refreshing, perfect for sipping in the breezy, coastal setting.
In summary, this is a fantastic spot for drinks and atmosphere, but the food quality doesn’t yet justify the pricing. With more care and refinement in the kitchen, this venue has the potential to offer a dining experience that matches its stunning...
