What a dinner @ Sixta! We arrived right when they opened at 6pm during the busy holiday season. We told the waiter we did not have reservations, and he said he had a table we could have until 8pm. Our waiter spoke fluent English and the menu had English descriptions which made ordering easy. Two in our party had beef topped with finley fried onions and fried potatoes wedges. Delicious and nice sized servings. Another in our party had deer ragout with gnocci. She said the meat was very tender and tasty. Dessert was an Apple Tart (house specialty recommended by our waiter) with a meringue topping for two of us. Divine - thought we had gone to heaven! Our daughter had cappuccino and Irish whiskey. As we were getting up from the table, the waiter called us back and gave us all house shots of hazelnut snapps. Yum! After all the negatives we have read about the rudeness of wait staff in Vienna restaurants, we were blown away by the great service at SIXTA. We liked that a tip was not included automatically and the food and service was so good we gave our waiter over 30%. We are now trying to change our agenda so that we can go back one more time before we...
Read moreI spotted this place on a Sunday evening. Despite not having booked, I was quickly offered a table near the bar. The staff were friendly and attentive, and recommended wine according to preference and menu pairing.
I started with beetroot mousse & goat cheese. This was fabulous. The beetroot texture was superb, while the goat cheese set off the pspperiness of the wine almost violently - each sip was a big ol' punch in the mouth of massive (but not overwhelming) flavour.
I followed this up with rindsuppe mit greißknödel - beef soup with a semolina dumpling. The soup was light, delicate and delicious. Clearly the chef has spent a good deal of time perfecting this dish, because the dumpling had a texture that I can only describe as "perfect". A one-weapon fight, the spoon sliced the dumpling like it was air, yet it kept together in a way I wouldn't have thought possible.
The main dish was wild boar, and this too was very good, coated with the richest sauce.
All in, I don't think I can recommend this place enough. A four course meal with wine pairings set me back €75, and for the quality of the food, service and wine, that's absolutely...
Read moreThis was one of the best meals I've ever had in my many trips to Europe! It was so good that we went two of our three nights in Vienna. The atmosphere was cozy, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Servers are extremely friendly and accommodating. On to the food...
Since I was in Austria, I had to try the veal schnitzel. It was light and crisp, drizzled with lemon and served with a truly unique potato salad made of scalloped potatoes with a creamy balsamic dressing and tomatoes. I generally love potato salad but this was unexpected, and so delicious! Also, the portions are HUGE. My sister and I ended up sharing one plate of the schnitzel and that was enough food for us both.
On the second night, I had the roast beef. It was served with some fried onions on top, and perfect potatoes (light and fluffy on the inside, crisp and salty on the outside).
Other dishes- My mom had the garlic linguini with giant prawns which she liked enough to have both nights! We finished our meal with the apple strudel and vanilla ice cream which was a delectable balance of warm and cold, tart and sweet, crispy and creamy. This is a must go...
