It's a cake joint. Think "nothing bundt cake" without the bundt or the display. It sells a variety of rum cakes. Two kinds are available for samples. If you buy at least the 4 for $22 special then you get a free shot of rum.
Taste test of the rum cake. First off, oh my gosh! The original rum cake (I sampled and bought) has pecans - that's new to me. The Kentucky bourbon rum cake (I bought but I don't think is available as a sample) has no nuts. The best thing about the rum cakes - they're very moist, like drenched in rum moist. No seriously, there's "rum flavor in swirls" that you're used to in the USA, and there's "I think this cake is trying to get me drunk because it's drenched, soaked and marinated in rum" rum flavor. You can smell the rum. The cakes are vacuum sealed then placed in a box for retail. Verdict: Worth it. Definitely my favorite short-lived souvenir.
What I will say is that the walk to here from the cruise ports is about 15 minutes but is uncomfortable because of the many abandoned, depressed and falling apart buildings that you'll walk past on your way there. It's mostly a ghost area with an occasional stray man sighted here and there. There's a security guard standing outside of the convenience store next door. It's a stark difference from the jewelry store side of Bay St. You're better off taking a taxi in that direction until things look...
Read moreWhen the bus tour by the port said that we're going to a rum cake factory, I thought it was going to be a huge factory. Shocked that it was just a small store with a kitchen on the back where they make their rum cakes. Despite the small shop, they had ample amounts of flavored rum cakes in a box ready to be taken back and eat to your heart's delight. They have small sizes and party sized ones so if you want a taste of every single one before setting your heart in one, you might as well get the small boxes. I personally loved the Amaretto flavored rum cake. The piña colada was also a hit! All cakes were very moist and flavorful! I brought some to my friend's house when he had a get-together and they loved it so much that they had to ask where I got it from. If I make my way back to Nassau, I'll definitely have to stop by here and pick some up! By the way, the rum is definitely present here and has a huge kick.
As part of the bus tour, the factory gave you extra free shots of alcohol on the bar next door depending on how much rum cakes you bought. Extra fun! Loved the hospitality and service. They...
Read moreAbsolutely wanted to try a rum cake and decided to stop by on my cruise to Bahamas. It's small but crowded. I think more people were into trying the samples then buying because we had no trouble paying for our cakes. Piña colada and original were the samples of the day and I ended up getting a large of the former. Phew, yeah I can taste the rum. Good stuff. This cake definitely isn't dry or lacking in alcohol. I know some reviews said that their purchases weren't as strong as the store samples. Though I have yet to try the large cakes, I can confirm that the small cake (Irish Cream flavor) definitely still has lots of rum in it.
Heads up if you're walking in the Bahama heat. They sold drinks (soda and water bottles) for $1.50 here. Bar next door sells the same for $2.00. So if you need to stock up for the rest of your day,...
