A Culinary Rollercoaster: My Experience at The Great Kebab Factory My recent dining experience at The Great Kebab Factory was, to put it mildly, a mixed bag of culinary highs and lows. While some dishes left a lasting positive impression, others were a significant disappointment, creating an overall experience that was far from cohesive. The meal began on a sour note with the Thai soup. It was excessively salty, a fundamental flaw that completely overwhelmed any other flavor it might have had. This was followed by the main attraction, the kebabs, which are supposedly the restaurant's namesake specialty. My expectations were high, but unfortunately, the kebabs were distinctly below average. They lacked the bold, rich flavors and tender texture one would expect from a place with "kebab factory" in its name. They were simply unremarkable. However, just as my hopes were beginning to fade, the fried rice arrived and was a welcome surprise. It was flavorful, well-cooked, and a solid, tasty dish that stood out from the lackluster starters. The delicious streak continued with the gulab jamun, which was truly superb. It was perfectly soft, soaked in just the right amount of syrup, and tasted absolutely divine—one of the best I've had in a long time. But the most significant letdown of the evening was undoubtedly the dum biryani. It was, to be frank, the worst biryani I have ever had. The flavors were off, the rice was poorly cooked, and it felt like a complete afterthought rather than a signature dish. This was a major disappointment, especially given its central role in many Indian-style meals. The meal ended on a high note, thanks to the other dessert items, which were all super tasty. From their presentation to their flavor profiles, everything about the desserts was excellent. They were a perfect conclusion to an otherwise inconsistent dining experience, almost making me forget the earlier disappointments. In conclusion, The Great Kebab Factory presents a peculiar dining paradox. While some dishes like the fried rice and all the desserts, especially the gulab jamun, were fantastic, the core items like the kebabs and biryani fell flat. If you're going for a delightful dessert experience and a good plate of fried rice, you might enjoy your visit. However, if you're looking for an exceptional kebab and biryani experience, you might be left wanting more. The restaurant has the potential for greatness, but the inconsistency in quality across its menu is a major issue that needs to...
Read moreFor a long time, I had been eager to try authentic North Indian cuisine. Thanks to my favourite Bangladeshi food blogger, Khaled Saifullah Bhai, I finally got the chance! 😊 I discovered The Great Kebab Factory through one of his videos, where he shared that their head chef hails from Lucknow, and they import all their spices directly from India for an authentic taste. Without wasting any time, I reached out to the Dhanmondi branch via WhatsApp. The manager, Ariyan Tanvir Bhai, was incredibly polite and helpful.
I ordered their special mutton biryani, kebab platter, and nihari. The biryani was exceptional and unlike the usual Dhaka-style biryani. It was bursting with flavour but not overly spicy, although you might occasionally find whole spices in the mix. There were no potatoes or boiled eggs, but the inclusion of coriander and mint between the rice grains added a refreshing touch. The rice had a beautiful orange and yellow hue, thanks to saffron and food colouring. The mutton portion was generous, easily enough for two to three people. Cooked in a traditional North Indian style, this biryani is a must-try for anyone in Dhaka craving authentic North Indian flavours! 😋
The nihari, like the biryani, was cooked in true North Indian fashion, which is not common in our country. It likely featured Kashmiri red chillies, giving it a rich, red colour. The nihari was full of spices, and the moment the gravy touched my mouth, I felt a spicy, pungent kick from the seasonings. This dish would be perfect for a chilly day. 🌶️
As for the kebabs, I particularly enjoyed the shikh kebab, tandoori chicken, and Amritsari macchi. Whether or not you like the galouti kebab depends on your personal taste buds.
In conclusion, if anyone in Dhaka is looking to experience authentic North Indian cuisine, I highly recommend this restaurant. However, for those of us raised in middle-class families, the prices might not be the most...
