We made a reservation for two to celebrate a birthday on a Saturday in June.
First, the location is beautiful. The walk to the restaurant from entering the park is stunning, and really adds to the uniqueness of the restaurant. Second, the style of the restaurant itself is amazing. It is very intimate, with grey, beige and dark tones. We have not been to a place more beautiful than Hertog Jan at Botanic.
Finally, the food is amazing. I do not want to give away the many surprises, as that is something the chef will take care of. We especially liked the use of local ingredients, and the stories shared by the staff about the dishes. The whole experience is really personal, where we felt appreciated as guests. Some of the highlights: the dessert was delicious, with rich flavour combinations (truffle and buttermilk ice cream) making for a perfect dish. The use of yuzu in some of the dishes was executed perfectly and we loved the beetroot dish (amazing texture and flavours).
All in all, a night to remember. A restaurant where you can indeed 'leave it to the chef'.
P.s. the surprise that we took back to our hotel...
Read moreThis beautiful restaurant, which at first glance looks like a modern farm, is hidden away in the Belgian countryside, about 20 minutes away from Bruges city centre. We arrived just before sunset, and walked around their garden whilst sipping on delicious floral iced tea. Seeing where they grow their produce definitely does something for your appetite. The staff are so friendly and clearly really enjoy working there. They show so much pride in their ethos, as they showed us around their kitchen, and explained their menu and wine list to us. We had the full on extensive experience tasting menu. And what a menu. They have such respect for their ingredients, and I haven't eaten so many edible flowers in my life. And if you asked me that potato, cheese and coffee eaten together tastes divine, I would call you crazy. But it really does work. Their 3 Michelin stars are truly deserved....
Read moreThe multi-course, gastronomic lunch at Hertog Jan was unforgettable and absolutely divine. The cuisine was the definition of perfection as well as unique with Japanese techniques combining with Belgian ingredients and flavors. I cannot say that I had a favorite dish as each one was outstanding in flavor, texture and presentation. (No wonder Hertog Jan has two Michelin stars and Gert De Mangeleer is one of the most famous chefs in Belgium.) In addition, the service was excellent and ambiance peaceful. Bravo!!!
Note Hertog Jan is only open 10 days per month (but for both lunch and dinner) so check dates and be sure to book months in advance. Chef De Mangeleer is always there cooking himself and each diner has a chance...
