Pharmacist Peter van Coudenberghe (1517-1599) laid out a unique herb and plant garden for the adjacent St-Elisabeth Hospital. He used more than 600 different plants to prepare medicines. This botanical garden exists to this day. The collection of herbs currently numbers around 2,000, several of which are protected by law. The conservatory houses a large collection of cacti and exotic plants. In the garden itself there are beautiful trees and shrubs and a sea of ​​flowers. The pond and frog pond were recently completely renovated. Just before the frog pond you will find the artwork 'Greening II', donated by artist Monique Donckers. The original militia gallery was also given a new look.

He started it in 1548. Twenty years later in 1568 there were already 600 exotic plant species from Africa, Asia and especially America. Needless to say, what a lot of effort and expense it took to get these plants, seeds and bulbs here! Van Coudenberghe therefore took care of it and invented an ingenious means to allow these plants to hibernate. It is a fact that he invented the principle of the orangeries, so that from now on it became possible to hibernate and acclimatize tropical plants in our regions.

Unfortunately, during the siege of Antwerp in 1594, the garden was overrun, trampled and destroyed under soldiers' boots and horse hooves... Van Couwdenberghe was then 65 years old and no longer had the energy or the plants to create a new garden. He died in 1599. But fortunately, today the Botanic garden is preserved, protected and maintained so we can enjoy in this little paradise on earth.
