Inexpensive and delicious. Friendly and helpful staff.
The noodles were excellent in texture; springy, had a bit of tooth to them. They tend to be on the soggier side in most noodle places in Ghent. Which I'm generally fine with since I'm a heathen, but I enjoyed how skillfully they do them here.
I picked n°19, "red miso tonkotsu bacon". The bacon is in fact pork belly (buikspek), thick slices that fall apart in your mouth. The dish also features nori, thinly sliced spring onions, wood ear mushrooms, roasted onions, a sliver of fish cake, coriander, and a divine soy sauce egg with an ooey-gooey centre.
I ordered kimchi and takoyaki on the side. The kimchi was pretty standard, with hints of sour and spiciness - but crispy nor sweet. The takoyaki was the true star. Hot, crispy, soft, and covered in sauce and bonito flakes. A great take on a wildly popular Japanese street food.
The vegetarian option, which my tablemate ordered, was also lovely. Comes with a heap of silky tofu, she couldn't finish it all.
We had the ginger tea to drink, which also features mint and lemon. Refreshing, hot and sweet.
If you're coming by car, use Savaanstraat (P4) underground parking around the corner. I usually spend €3 there, for a...
Read moreGreat place to grab your lunch. The lunch menu can be interesting but not for a person who has a big appetite as portion is quite on a small side (from my partner’s experience on beef bento box, which he shown some disappointment as he did compared to the bento box from Japan). Furthermore, we can’t complain with the portion that you get for the price. Since the restaurant have away the name of “Japanese noodle bar” I would definitely recommend going for trying out the noodle (ra-men). It was good but it was not like amazing as some people did pointed out. But I will definitely come back to try out dishes for sure.
The staffs were ok to friendly (depending on which staffs). The male staff only spoke in English but it’s fine as we do speak English. My only disappointment was the green tea was instant but ginger tea wasn’t (it gave off mixed feeling as presentation of the tea isn’t consistent, we don’t mind but some people would definitely bother by it).
The restaurant itself is cozy and you can see the popularity of this place. It want too busy but then people definitely comes in and out continuously that the seatings are always more or less occupied by the clients. Also dog/pet seems to be allowed in this...
Read moreAlthough there are better places in Gent for ramen, gyoza, karage, etc, (although it's by no means not good; taste is actually very good, just not AS good), it stands out by having more dishes available; like soba, yaki udon, etc. The gyoza tasted very nice, but the sauce they give lacks in acidity, and instead tastes sweet. Same for karage; it tastes pretty good, with a note of ginger, as it should, but then it comes with the typical cheap fake sweet and sour sauce (instead of Kwepie mayonnaise), which is a real pity. The ramen didn't taste Japanese, but if you take abstraction from how you'd expect it to taste, it taste pretty good nevertheless. Finally, the soba were also good (nothing can go wrong here!), but again the sauce was not authentic; it lacked daikon, which is a major contributor to the taste. That said, again here, even though it didn't taste like the original, it tasted good nevertheless.
Just for the taste, since there are some amazing options out there in Gent, I would give it 4 stars. But considering the very friendly prices, I'd say this place punches above its class, and rightly...
