I was very disappointed with my last visit at Horloge du Sud. I can definitely not recommend to go there with larger groups. Even after a long discussion, they charged us for dishes we had not ordered. Furthermore, half of the group paid for side dishes, though it was indicated in the menu that you can choose your side dish and though I had asked waitress A explicitly if this was the case.

I ordered a water carafe with tap water from waitress A. 30 min later, waitress B reprimanded me that water carafes were not common in Belgium, but only in France bringing me a bottled water. I refused to take it. 5 min later, waitress A, who had not heard of the discussion with B, served us water carafes. Apparently, the restaurant has carafes exactly for this purpose.

I was responsible for a group of 15 people and had reserved a table for us. The whole situation brought me in a very uncomfortable situation.

The restaurant still reserves 2 stars, because the food...

Unpleasant. We came as a group. "Suggestions" communicated in advance became the only three choices. These three dishes resembled more canteen food than a decent restaurant dish, not to talk about an exotic one: a chicken leg supposed to have been prepared with peanut juice, but nobody could taste this, with rice (a side that's to be paid on top, one of several potential choices in the menu, certainly not the most African one, nobody was asked which side or even consulted which would be the most tasty, special ...), a bit of fish advertised to be with a lime sauce that nobody could identify, under a heap of onions, with rice (again), and a vegetable stew. Nothing tasted for much, leave alone anything special. Anything else from the menu or daily menu was refused, overheard...

Good african style Restaurant.

The beverage selection is good as we expect in Brussels places, bit serving/food deserve some remarks. Serving is slow, although the crew is friendly and helpful .

Food itself try to mimic the original African origins dishes from several cultures. This made a mixed result on the quality of the food. Is good, but is not fantastic.

Prices in general are average for Brussels, so we considered fare.

We had one incident In special, an issue with the Brazilian Style Muqueca that came with shrimp, even asked to not as some guest could have allergic issues.

So, i considered that is a good place to go, but i rule out as a first option unless you are really craving for try some...

"This was our first time trying African cuisine and we couldn't have picked a better restaurant than this one. The experience was fantastic. The service was warm and welcoming, and the staff spoke excellent English. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and the friendly recommendations from the staff. Personally, I ordered the Dibi with the Tango Gingembree drink and both come highly recommended. The meat was incredibly tender and the spices used in the dish were amazing. A major highlight of this restaurant is the background music, which perfectly complemented the food and the overall experience. The music was great and really enhanced our dining experience."

Unfortunately the food has deteriorated since my last visit 5 years ago - both the Yassa and Liboke were about the blandest I've ever tasted. I'd looked forward to my return visit all weekend and was disappointed - the iconic, historic environment was the same, the service was great but the food......what a huge let down. Seems L'Horloge du Sud has chosen to cater for the non-African market - that was the clientele, reflected by bland food - next time I'll keep walking to somewhere more authentic but please improve! (Oh, and the Akwaaba starter was just bland terribleness)
