In Belgium and Leuven, there are many excellent restaurants. A well known tyre manufacturer's guide is usually a good source for finding those. We have dined in almost all the Leuven restaurants mentioned in the guide. Surprisingly, Taste is not found in there, which is a real surprise and pity. Without diminishing the quality of other fine restaurants in Leuven, the dinner we enjoyed today at Taste was the best meal we've had in Leuven.
The dishes were consistently original, fresh, and delicious. The oyster dish was exceptional, the eel was elegant, and the lamb with dolma really tasty. There was not a single weak spot in the six-course menu. All the dishes were carefully prepared and beautiful, forming an elegant whole.
The only disappointment of the dinner was related to our own decision to skip cheeses. Having seen the excellent cheese trolley and hearing the head chef's presentations of the cheeses, we realized we had made a mistake. The passion for good food was clearly evident and marked the entire meal experience.
Taste's decor is pleasantly casual and the service is friendly yet professional. The experience was crowned by homemade ice cream cones served from an ice cream troley after the coffee and petit fours.
We ended up at Taste by chance after noticing an advertisement for a dinner in Malz, the Leuven's top beer bar, where the dishes are paired with beers selected by Malz's beer sommelier. The beers worked well with the dishes, making the...
Read moreWhat a fantastic gem in Leuven! I lived in Leuven as a teen 35 years ago. I was back to show the town to my wife and my recollections where always of a college town with simple, good local food. I was surprised to find Taste when searching for a dinner spot for the evening. First of all, I had the date wrong (the next day) and they quickly and easily moved us to that night. The setting in the restaurant is modern yet still fits in with the historic feel of the city. The food is world class, fresh, interesting, and delicious. Every course was tasty and there wasn’t a single thing that didn’t “hit”. We opted for the n.a. drink pairings and those we also super interesting and tasty. We were glad we opted for the cheese trolley as well. The Chef’s selection was amazing, and his descriptions were fascinating. The staff and Chef were warm and welcoming. Taste was a great experience in every way and I highly recommend a visit. I would say it would even be worth going out of...
Read moreAmazing restaurant. We had the 6 course menu with accompanying beers and wines. The food was good, and my personal favourite was the langoustine. I liked the vibes of the restaurant as it's not too stiff and the staff is really easy going. The somelier was really knowledgeable about wines and I loved the mini ice-cart at the end.
The cheese desert came with a huge cart and they created one big plate for us to taste all the cheeses available which were procured from the local cheese master Elsen.
The beers were a good change of the typical Belgian beers, rather they used European microbreweries such as La Source, Braxatorium and Hof Ter Dormaal. Personally I would like to see more options for the beers (e.g. lambiek sours for the cheese). But still overall pleasantly surprised there was at least the option of some good craft beers available.
Just be aware that this quality comes at a steep price, but overall I think it was...
