Bier Central Mechelen — Restaurant in Mechelen

Terrible experience. The manager of the place aggressively shouted at me during 15 minutes, because of a misunderstanding during reservation. I booked tables for 25 people on the first floor for drinks and maybe food. The question was not asked until what time we would need the tables, the manager just assumed that it would be for a maximum of 2 hours and made another reservation for the same seats. We were of course not finished in 2 hours with such a big group of people who were having a good time eating and drinking = spending hundreds of euros. When the booking overlap turned out, the manager attacked me claiming it was my fault that this situation happened. He was shouting at me while standing in my face literally pointing a finger at me and calling me "schatteke". I was really shocked by this unprofessional and agressive behaviour, especially because my guests and me, we really did not want to argue at all, we just wanted to find a solution to not ruin the nice time that we were having together. Probably the manager had a bad day as he was already rather unfriendly when I arrived and wanted to discuss how we can solve the paying separately. Bier central is the best. It's 'the place to beer'.

Ok, it's a small chain, and by small, I think there are four of them dotted around Flanders. It's not like the UK's Weatherspoons. We've tried three of the four. All excellent and consistent in quality of produce, gorgeous interior, wholesome food, and awesome team. But here we're talking about Mechelen.

All the bier central usuals. Excellent beer, and if you don't know what you want, ask for a recommendation. The guys and girls that take your order know their stuff. Explain what sort of thing you like, what you're in the mood for, and they'll recommend you the right beer.

Food, we only had the mix platter so can't comment on the other stuff, but the sharing platters are awesome. They won't win any prizes, but they taste darned good and there's a good selection.

Atmosphere : bier central always has a good atmosphere. Thing old fashioned country pub but in the heart of the city. Gorgeous woodwork interior. Like a cathedral to beer. But the Mechelen one has an extra bonus. Sit outside and chances are you'll be serenaded for free by the bell music from...

It was our last beer before we would leave Mechelen and head back to London on Saturday evening (Train from Mechelen to Brussels Midi was 7:03pm and we left the cafe at 6:46pm!). We only arrived there after 6pm, I first ordered food first then beer. I would love to try as much beer as possible but running out of time.
