Update 16/09/2025: We were in Ypres for our silver wedding anniversary and I reserved a table here all the way back in June so I could make sure of a good table. Unfortunately it wasn't so. We were sat upstairs by the staircase and toilets and had to endure people constantly going to and fro including staff with dirty dishes as the washing-up facilities were behind us. Also my husband's seat was underneath a very bright downlight. Not the romantic ambience we were hoping for. The food was good but my mains of fish stew was covered with a thick layer of toasted cheese. This might be the custom for Flemish fish stew but the menu gave no indication and the waiter said nothing. As I'd had a cheese croquette as a starter, it was too much cheese 😝 and it spoilt my enjoyment of the meal. My husband enjoyed his mains of steak tartare but suspected it was pre-minced beef rather than hand-chopped steak. It's the first time we were slightly disappointed with our visit to In 't Klein Stadhuis and will think twice before going again for a special occasion. New photo added.
Update 11/03/2023: My husband and I enjoyed a lovely evening and meal here for his birthday. We love Ypres and Belgium and this is definitely one of the better hostelries!
A very popular bar restaurant in one of the main squares in Ypres that we've visited for just drinks, for lunch and for dinner over the years and it's always been very good. Booking is...
Read moreThere was building work close by which didn't show this place in the best light. Hopefully this is a temporary situation. The food portions have been reduced, quality and service were still high but so were the prices, which seem to have increased dramatically since a previous visit. 7€ for four slices of bread and some butter!! No surprise the place was very quiet. It's still worth a visit but unless I win the lottery I'll be looking elsewhere next time I'm in Ypres. I don't like leaving negative sounding reviews, especially ones for the hospitality trade, where it's hard to make a profit. Ideal location, great food, good service but prices need a rethink.
UPDATE: In fairness to the owners and staff of this restaurant , there seems to have been some mis- communication. Feedback is that building work (outside of the businesses control) will soon come to an end. To prepare really good food, requires talented kitchen staff, quality ingredients and time for preparation and cooking. My comment regarding the bread would appear to have been a simple mistake. As mentioned, I have visited previously and will certainly reserve a table next time I'm in the area. Hopefully I'll...
Read moreThis restaurant was actually recommended by our Hotel so tonight we would be onto a winner…. And generally very good, location, food good but not brilliant… However the main waiter ( Mike) was quite nonchalant to almost rude in his service…. I do not think he wanted us at his restaurant despite my son and I dressed very smartly as we had just been to the last Post?….We ordered drinks which came quite quickly but our food order took over 35 mins?….. half way through our meal I requested some tap water only to be then charged £3 for the privilege?….In all of France where we have been travelling through and also back in the UK you do not get charged for Tap water… this is not a monetary issue more a point of principal which Mike just did not get and also we was not informed when we ordered this?…. I challenged this with Mike who then have me a limp excuse about his chef having to washing up glasses etc?…. My £20 tip went back into my pocket as a result….. very poor service and I would suggest Mike has a rethink on his policy,… with us British( who I might add pay a lot into Ypres economy) then he might get better reviews and custom??…. Not cricket and not how to treat...
