Markt22 — Restaurant in Ypres

A very nice & very popular restaurant right in the centre of Ypres serving good food including a good choice of steaks.

A nice bottle of Merlot for €27 wasn't too bad but with no tap water available it was very annoying to be then charged €5.50 for bottled water, effectively two glasses of water for €2.75 (each, per glass) - that's not great & needs to be addressed, especially when you're paying around €30 for a steak, there really ought to be tap water available. Our steaks were cooked just right, mine the Tataki Japanese steak was lovely & I really enjoyed it, my glass of Merlot a fine accompaniment to it.

Our waiter was a little frosty, he was quite abrupt and a little blunt. Our second waiter was more welcoming and friendly, very different. I'm not sure if it was due to the language barrier, and our lack of speaking Flemish (our fault of course) or whether it was because he'd had a long or bad shift, either way he wasn't particularly welcoming and I felt like I was inconveniencing when asking him anything.

We were advised to book, just to be on the safe side but it wasn't too busy when we visited at...

FILTHY experience - not recommended.

I had the unlucky chance to sit by the stools in front of the bar. The barman wipes his nose with the palm of his hand (he doesn’t know they invented tissues), then he scratches his head, comes out of the kitchen picking his nose and if this wasn’t enough he regularly prepares aperitifs picking ice with his hands (he doesn’t ever use tongs).

Enough to see of this disgusting situation, and it shouldn’t be the customer to say this. Yes, who knows what happens inside a kitchen, but have the decency at least not to do all this in from of customers right behind the bar.

I reported it to the (nice) lady serving the tables and she was gutted and understandably didn’t have the courage to say anything. She apologised at the end bringing the bill, I told her they should not do this, instead of apologising afterwards.

Food ? Apart from forgetting to bring the appetiser (oh btw it was the “same” guy who took my order) the steak was OK but I can find plenty of...

Ik heb lang geaarzeld om dit te schrijven. Maar ik was heel erg teleurgesteld bij mijn bezoek. Niet gereserveerd, gn terrasplaats vrij dus naar binnen. Geen probleem. Apero ok. Tafels komen vrij buiten maar geen vraag of we misschien op de terras willen zitten idpv binnen. Bestelling eten en drank. Drank is er direct. En dan wachten. Lang wachten. Klanten die na ons binnenkwamen zien we eten en zelfs betalen en vertrekken. Ons glas is bijna leeg maar geen enkele aanduiding dat ons eten eraankomt of dat er een probleem is. Ik erger mij. Mijn partner vraagt geduld. Uiteindelijk na een uur wachten informeren we naar onze maaltijd. We zien een paniekje bij de persoon die onze bestelling opnam en hem vlug op een paar buttons op zijn tablet duwen. Iemand anders stelt ons gerust en zegt dat alles eraan komt. Geen melding van foutje ofzo. Even later krijgen we onze maaltijd met excuses voor het wachten van de persoon die opdient. Van de opnemer die de fout heeft gemaakt geen blik en geen woord. Een extra drankje ofzo om het wachten te veraangenamen komt blijkbaar niet in het gedacht. Ook bij het afrekenen geen kik over het eindeloze wachten. Wat een teleurstelling. Zien we dan ook bij de afrekening dat de markt in Ieper duur is. Enkele dagen ervoor meer en minstens even lekker gegeten aan de voet van de arc de triomphe in Parijs voor 15% minder geld. Jammer....
