Maggie’s is off the main drag a bit.
I met some people from Portland, OR at breakfast. They knocked on my door later asking me to join them for dinner. I accepted and off we went.
Like most establishments on Caye Caulker, the tables are under a roof and are of the picnic variety.
Despite having 3 of the large tables marked as Reserved, we were quickly seated and presented with menus.
I chose to order the Curry Coconut Shrimp with Coconut Rice and a Baked Potato. I drank a Belikin Beer and a bottle of water.
Drinks were brought out and we continued our conversation from earlier.
There are fewer things in life better than a good meal with good conversation.
Our food was brought out a short time later. I completely forgot about pictures so I will do my best to describe my meal.
The Curry Coconut Shrimp was in a bowl and my nose was greeted with the subtle aromas of shrimp, coconut, and spices. I took a spoonful of the Coconut Rice and mixed it into the curry sauce. It was very good. As has been the case each time I have ordered Coconut Rice, I was served a mound of it.
I had decided to get a baked potato to shake things up a bit culinary wise. When my plate was brought out, the baked potato was the size of a large plum. While not what I was hoping for, it was topped generously with butter and baked to perfection.
Again, my apologies for not having pictures from Maggie’s. I did enjoy my meal.
The cost of my meal...
Read moreFood Stew beef with white rice and beans, plantain and avocado. Food was amazing! The food is made by a real local, and native. Flavor/seasoning was 10/10 for the stew beef. The white rice was practically perfect! The red kidney beans was absolutely delicious as well. Fresh avocado slice and a fried plantain, was cooked to perfection. I really do mean it that the food was delicious!
Vibe Real chill, off the main road and not a lot of traffic. So a real good place to sit and chat. Seems like a lot of locals also eat here. I would like to see the tables taken care of a little more, and maybe a bug net around the dining area (all outdoor dining) as there are flys that try to eat your food. But that is all over the island, so that is not fault of their own.
Service Food was probably already prepared as it came very quickly compared to the rest of the island. Probably within 15-20 mins. Which is a huge plus on our part.
Staff Staff was kind and respectful, I believe it is a Belizean family owned restaurant. We did try to order a few things at the same time and slightly confused our waiter. We had a group of (8). So some of us did not get the food exactly as we wanted and that was due to our error. Again, the staff was very kind. The cook even came out to...
Read moreThe worst experience I had in Belize. My family of 7 including 4 children under 11 years old ordered dinner at Maggie's yesterday. An hour later a large party was seated and the waitress told our table and another table with kids that not only had they had not started preparing our meal but that we would have to wait until the dinner for the party that had just been seated to be cooked before they started ours or qe could pay for the drinks we were served and cancel our order. We obviously left because the 4 kids were so hungry and tired after waiting for an hour that we had to find a faster solution. Kids should never be treated with such disregard. I should add that this was the only negative experience we had on the entire trip, it was so disappointing it was worth writing...
