It was not the first time for me at Gurkha, but most likely it will be the last. I don't normally leave reviews but this time I definitely feel cheated by the restaurant on purpose and it is only fair to warn the public against such dishonest behavior by a business. The overall experience was disappointing on multiple levels. The food tasted good but service was not so good. After last night, I believe that the the restaurant definitely "cheats" its customers even though the food is already over-priced and they should be making enough (60 lv for 2 persons - only with a main course and 1 side and 1 soda/water per person). Here is why I claim they are cheaters and probably don't deserve your money. One of the meals we ordered was a chicken dish but they brought it with a different dark meat (didn't even say what it was when I had them take it back). They brought it again with chicken, and all seemed OK. When we got the bill, I saw that we were charged for 2 cokes and 2 waters but we had consumed 1 of each. Maybe an honest mistake again (second mistake, but also possibly cheating). Anyway, they reduced the bill and I left a small tip even though I was not that happy with the service and that they are also charging extra for the plastic boxes they used to pack our leftovers for home). But yet, the biggest disappointment, and the reason why I am writing this review is because on the following day when I was eating my left overs from Gurkha, I found pieces of the other "dark" meat in my chicken-only dish! Way to go Gurkha.. you most definitely took out the "wrong" meat out of the dish, added 4-5 pieces of chicken and served me the same dish.. Now I wonder if you are not even using leftovers from other customers so you don't waste anything.. Gurkha owners must be thinking they are cleverer than their customers to fool (cheat) them like this. Reading this a customer should wonder what they might be serving you, in case you still feel brave enough to try Gurkha Sofia. To be fair, taste was always good for me, but I do like spicy Indian food. Even if they didn't cheat on purpose on the bill, they did cheat on purpose by using the same dish (sauce) and simply replacing the meat inside to serve it again. I might expect this at a cheap restaurant but Gurkha is a very expensive restaurant (almost double what it would cost at a comparable mid-price restaurant). Switching the meat is definitely the work of the main chef (who is the owner). It's a pity. He might be a good cook but based on the facts he also seems to be a greedy disrespectful person. Do these guys deserve your money? Make your own choice.
After 2 years: We were nearby and decided to give the restaurant another try hoping things had changed for the better. What a mistake! Our last time for sure! The same female waiter (and owner of the restaurant I assume) came to announce that we might have to wait longer for our food since the place was quite full (it was a holiday), so I said no problem we can wait.. But right away she started "Well, I told you that, because few months ago you left a bad review and I had a lot of problems.. " I was quite surprised she had recognized us (read the review and connected to us after 2 years).. I did not hope for such a welcome but nevertheless I told her that it must have been a couple years since then and that review was based on what really happened. She insisted it was not true (kind of suggesting I had lied), because it would have been very difficult for them to do it (whatever she meant). I told her "Anyway.. " wishing to leave all that behind.. but she was so bitter and accused us for leaving "a mess" around the table last time (2 yrs ago).. and bragged that she hadn't mentioned anything about it.. (how gracious of her..) I couldn't remember how we left the table 2 years ago and simply told her that our boys might have played a bit or so. Well, she again started complaining how the review caused her troubles and she never got such review. She left without taking our order (as if refusing us...
Read moreWe have been staying in Sofia for weeks and we were exploring the Indian foods, we went for Sunday night dinner, at the time of entering the restaurant he said throw the water bottle outside.
So, we were patient and kept the bottle outside and entered inside.
We were three of us and wanted to occupy bigger table and he asked us to seat on smaller table and we are okay.
Started looking at the menu and he came and asked us are we ready to order, we requested him for couple of minutes to shortlist the items.
Finally, we decided to order and he came with very arrogant face and it's our wish to order whatever the quantity we want and he started argument with our friends instead of taking the order.
This guy(owner cum waiter) is very worst I have never seen such person so far.
We have visited so many places and restaurants didn't see this behavior.
It's very sad to see that few people spoil the image of sofia because he is from Nepal.
You are horrible and worst behavior, I can't imagine how worst food you will serving and all the reviews seems be paid review.
Good luck for manipulative / arrogant restaurant.
I wish all the customer never trust this restaurant Google...
Read moreOverpriced!!! Tasteless!!!
As I enjoy eating outside and having a little bit more than 20 years eating Indian, I choose to trust the good critics for this restaurant and went for lunch. I order the Dal Mutton Hariali 18.99 leva and a Nan that come total of 22лв. When I first taste it, tasted good due to all the herbs they are using. After the first bites the first impression of the taste disappear. The food was warmish and there was not taste of the lentils at all! Underneath of this green sauce the mutton was very tender, tasteless not even salt and was COLD!! I have the impression is that they were cooked separately and when I order they put the spinach/lentil sauce on the top. After finish eating the taste that left was of nothing! I will have had a better aftertaste with a pizza or kebab around the corner.
For travelers who know how the indian food from different regions taste better go somewhere else. Doesn't compare with the indian restaurants in England or in the middle east. For people that want something exotic but they have never tasted indian food before, I m sure what ever they eat they will put 5 stars.
What I really enjoyed:...
