Absolutely horrendous experience, although I was too shocked to react on the spot and chose not to make a scene, which I believe I should have. And I believe it was the owner or manager (an elderly white man).
19 October 2019 evening, we were a bunch of 10+ people celebrating a birthday party at the restaurant. I was the one who arrived the latest, wearing a t-shirt with "I EAT AS" print, it was supposed to be a fun night for us.
To put it all upfront before going to details, it should not have been a big of a problem had the manager/owner come to me with a reasonable comment on my t-shirt print, but he hadn't. At first, I was already conscious that yeah maybe it was inappropriate of me.
He went on about there were children in the restaurant and it was inappropriate, and if I could turn my t-shirt inside out. In the meantime I didn't notice any discomfort nor uneasy reaction from the family that the manager claimed. (we have a child in our table ourselves). But I could be wrong. Till this point, I was considering obliging and you know change the t-shirt, but the worse kept coming
Within mere seconds before I could even process and say anything, he did what most customers would consider the worst treatment a customer could imagine. He went on and said: "I don't care what he does in his spare time..." referring me as a third person doing what I do that the t-shirt print says. And ultimately I was given an ultimatum to turn my shirt inside out or leave, which I chose to leave, of course which such humiliation.
After leaving and processing everything, I believe it was very intolerable in a sense that the owner used such insensitive homophobic comment about what I do in my spare time just because my t-shirt print say so, which was really unnecessary for a t-shirt print. Giving me the choice to turn it inside out, was like telling me to be ashamed of myself and I should go hide because I dressed up super gay, and that I was not welcomed in the restaurant. I also should not even have paid for the meal because I literally was asked to leave.
In this day and age, in this business industry you realize the word-of-mouth really does make or break a business, I am really shocked that he owner/manager made such disgusting blunder. Had this been in Brooklyn like the name of the restaurant, the people there would be more reactive to such situation and confronted straight out, because this is beyond unacceptable, it's a hate crime.
I have also read and heard a lot more from my peers, that this is not the first this happens to the customers, ranging from offensive t-shirt print or even tattoos, to literally staring at the customers because they wore and made statement such as LGBT symbol that might conflict with his conservative view (my carefully made speculation here). Some of my gay friends also experienced that but with a more subtle discrimination tactics: getting bills before they even finished dinning TWICE.
There are many many restaurants in Phnom Penh, and way better price, value for money, which I think this restaurant used to an okay place, until this incident happened. My money will not be spent ever again on such second-class citizen treatment, especially from a foreign expat towards me in my own home country.
With multiple incidents similar to mine resurfacing at the restaurant, you'll never what you could wear or say or act that might offend the restaurant owner himself and eventually will be asked to leave.
I wrote such long an emotional review because of two points:
It was such a painful personal experience, because I was closeted for more than two whole decades, and I was very very upset and mad that I didn't even know how to confront or react on the spot.
To warn existing and future potential customers as the review section serve. I was not welcomed there, and I won't be going back for sure.
Enjoy...
Read moreBrooklyn Pizza Restaurant in street 123 Phnom Penh Cambodia . Two years ago I visited this restaurant and after a few minutes was told by one of the owners that my tee shirt may offend some customers and could I please go into the toilet and turn it inside out, so I did it. Fast forward two years to last night 2/03/19 , once again visited this restaurant and was told even before we had ordered that my tattoos could offend some customers and next time wear a long sleeve shirt This is the 21 century and businesses can spend bucket loads on advertising but word of mouth is the best way any company including restaurants can attract new customers All the staff at the Brooklyn Pizza restaurant wore a black uniform with the restaurant name on the front but this guy who came to my table to tell me my tattoos could offend some customers, had no uniform no name badge , telling people what to wear and covering up tattoos that some customers may find offensive is no way to run a business , does he tell others that are blind,, in a wheelchair,, next time leave your cane or wheelchair at home. Also some confusion about two Brooklyn Pizza restaurants , one in street 123 the other in street 113 that's does home delivery only,, I thought both were the same owners same food , but one has great food the other offers not very nice food . So after being told twice in two years about my tee shirt and this time about my tattoos,, the only restaurant in Cambodia or the world to tell me about my tee shirt or tattoos,, saying they could offend other customers I won't ever return and for word of mouth I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone, One word of advice wear a name badge or company uniform so at least I know the person I'm talking with is the owner or not just some customer who's got some hang ups about what people wear or what tattoos they have. Its the 21 century and freedom of speech, stop living in the past and Treat all customers with respect Fast forward again 5.45am some 10 hours 3/03/19 after ordering a burger I've spent the last 2 plus hours in the bathroom because my burger meat patties were running red with blood at first I thought it was beetroot juice but the red was blood coming from the undercooked beef patties it was almost raw meat and now I'm feeling the after affects. I've just seen other comments on undercooked burger patties but still you serve them up,, eating undercooked beef patties is a serious health issue,. My I suggest you spend more time in the kitchen than walking around your restaurant telling people what to wear or what not to wear or what tattoos you like or...
Read moreWe heard about another spot but it was closed today so someone else referred us here.
It looks authentic from the outside so we were excited! I have been craving pizza and a good Caesar salad!
Food came, we asked for blue cheese in the salad since it didn't have it.
Salad came with the pizza which was disappointing because eating the salad first makes the pizza cold. But then the Caesar dressing tasted like they took Mayo, watered it down and added sugar. They put 2 pieces of anchovies and put on top of salad, that really was the only thing that was a reminiscent of a Caesar. We hadn't had bacon in so long was excited for a crispy topper. It wasn't.
The pizza looked really good, but the crust was eh. We ordered the meat lovers (extra large) I will say the sausage was on point! It was perfectly seasoned, the other toppings didn't really stand out. The crust was quite underwhelming, but the saving grace was the sausage.
Over all, I'd give this place 6.5 but I round up to 7 since it's...
