Located on the bustling food haven on Bassac street in Phnom Penh, the gentle and quaint Nepali restaurant looked so inviting as I walked past one busy day. I must confess that Nepali food is something I have not tasted in decades as it was rare to come by in places I was located in Asia. But I missed the cuisine from my university days in New York … and all my Nepali friends in London.
The restaurant was quite a delightful return to my Nepali nostalgia. They prepared a smorgasbord of treats for me to taste. I had garlic naan bread which was excellent and very finely baked. The butter chicken was superb with the right amount of spice. Oh, the Chilli momos were my favourite as they were crisp on the outside and tender inside. Yabada daba doo. I was at Gurkha Place like Scooby on wheels for a good rice and curry feed. I highly recommend you follow suit!
For drinks I had my usual masala chai. Now I am a masala chai conneisueur and this place had a good masala chai with the right mix of cloves and cardamoms. Not to be missed on a visit to Gurkha Place.
The staff told me their chefs were from Nepal and North India.
The restaurant has been around 2 years now and is owned by a young Nepali Gurhka who really looks the top fitness part.
The service and staff were signature Nepali hospitality. So gentle, kind and welcoming at Gurkha Place. This element of my meal made the whole visit so worthwhile because the service was so good and kind not to mention well spoken.
The restaurant is a quiet place and perfect for a casual date or a larger business meeting that requires some peace and quiet. It has a full bar as well. There are only eleven tables in this dining spot so make a reservation on weekends or busy days.

Read moreI recently dined at this restaurant and tried their Butter Chicken Curry, but unfortunately, I was quite disappointed. The dish lacked the balance of spiciness and creaminess that is characteristic of a good Butter Chicken Curry. Instead, it felt almost like I was eating plain tomato paste, which overwhelmed the flavor profile. It left me wondering if this was a deliberate choice or just an oversight in preparation. I’d genuinely like to know the concept behind this recipe.
Additionally, I noticed that the dessert I ordered was double-charged on the bill. It was only after I pointed it out that the error was addressed. While mistakes happen, the staff showed no sign of apology or concern, which was disheartening and left a negative impression.
Overall, this experience fell short of expectations. I hope the restaurant can improve its attention to detail both in terms of its dishes and service, as these aspects are crucial for a satisfying...
Read moreOur expectations were very high as our friends from Australia had rated this place as exceptional for Indian food
However our experience was quite too the contrary. The restaurant has two Indian chefs and one from Nepal
When we entered the place found a couple on the other table talking to someone loudly on a speaker phone . We requested the restaurant staff to politely go and request them to turn off the speaker as the restaurant being small, our whole dining experience got terribly spoilt as the restaurant manager and staff did not have the courage or courtesy to look after their other customers . As a result, we had to suffer this loud speaker conversation for the entire meal
Food was average . The yellow dal had the turmeric not cooked properly, the lady fingers were nice and the raita too salty . Basically even a basic meal was not executed well
Restaurant staff were polite and courteous
First day in Phnom Penn did not end...
