Great open space leading away from the Royal Palace area that is popular with families and young people for picnics, playing and of course, public exercise classes. Go there for people watching in the early evening and for the lights and fountain display (not working when I visited later in evening around 10pm).

Go in daylight if you want pictures of the socialist realist statue Cambodian-Vietnamese Friendship Memorial dedicated to the liberation of Cambodia by Vietnamese forces in 1979. There is also a golden stupa memorial to 16 demonstrators killed by a hand grenade thrown in to a crowd in more recent years.

Once you have walked the length of Wat Botum away from the Palace, you can join another walk way that is also traffic free and leads to the Independence Monument.
