Read moreA truly mediocre hostel with lots of potential in Siem Reap. 3/5.
Location is fantastic with easy walking access to all of the downtown attractions and services, like pub street and mini-marts. Easy and quick access for tours and Grab/Pass pickups. Loads of good food nearby. (5/5)
My biggest disappointment: This hostel charges for filtered water (not bottled). I have never seen this in a hostel before in SEA as this is usually included in the bed nightly rate. The charge is absurd in my opinion and should be changed ($0.25/1L, $0.37/1.5L). Increase the price of the room by $0.50 and allow (1) 1.5L bottle refills daily with a room card. It’s egregious and appears greedy to nickel and dime for water when the water out of the hostel sink is unsafe for consumption. Not allowing free water just encourages people to buy new plastic bottles and throw them away after one use.
Hostel has a good restaurant and staff are truly exceptional. Every staff member was friendly, helpful, and patient. Loved the staff. Although at checking I was not informed that drinking water cost extra and towels were available for a deposit.
Facilities leave a lot to be desired. As mentioned in reviews, facilities are run down, AC in the room is really poor (and it’s shut off during the day), there is no other AC common space around. Lockers were small and awkward sized, roommate pairings were bizarre. Cleanliness was decent, bathrooms were cleaned frequently and always had soap. Wi-Fi was spotting throughout the facility, despite the number of digital nomads ironically.
Social activities were lacking and there was no rep visible. They do have a schedule of events, but I was surprised how unorganized some of them were (quiz night, movie night was empty). I would not consider this a social hostel, despite it being one of the biggest hostels I’ve personally visited. Tables in the restaurant were separate and discouraged community mingling.
Food was pretty decent (4/5) and reasonably priced. Some dishes were mediocre. If they cut some items on their menu and focused on a few more of the high-selling, popular items and improved them, it would be an even better in-house restaurant. Alas, people also want variety.
Overall, it was an okay stay. Staff made it fantastic, but the facilities, social aspects, and water charges made it mediocre unfortunately. Good for a quick visit to Angkor and Angkor Wat,...
Read moreIts a decent place don’t get me wrong. The main pool is nice and its a nice scene in the lobby/restaurant/bar area. It just seems like they don’t know if they want to be a crappy hotel or a full amenity hostel. Nothing here is above average, and for the price of the dorms and privates, I expected way more.
The staff were unfortunately the worst part of any interaction I had in the hostel. They are not welcoming at all and are truly unhelpful bordering on incompetent. Just because you awkwardly yell hello and good bye every time someone walks in or out, does not mean you are hospitable. They examine your money through a microscope and never have the change you requested even though you probably gave them the change you need the previous day. They charge 1000 riel to refill your water bottle with luke warm water and their 4am sunrise breakfast ’buffet’ is just some fruit with hardboiled eggs and bad coffee. Awful employee experience, quite average to below average dining experience
The bathrooms were disgusting. It really takes a truly gross bathroom for me to mention the cleanliness of the facilities. You cannot walk barefoot anywhere or your feet will be black in minutes. Trash all over the floors and seems every surface is wet at all times with water, urine or anything else. Brushing your teeth staring at the urinal. It was comical towards the end. The cleaning crew started knocking on doors at 830am the first morning I was there and woke up the entire room. Its both idiotic and just plain rude to clean rooms that early when you tell people they can check out at 12. Cleanliness and comfort gets a 1/10
Lastly, this type of property attracts the young traveller who travels in packs of 4 or more. For a group of 4 or 6 young kids on gap year, its probably amazing. You could book an entire 6 person dorm and lay by the pool all day and enjoy some sub par activities with other kids your age. I found it very difficult and unenjoyable as a solo traveler. The girls lay by the pool on the long chairs literally all day in the same spot making it impossible for other people to enjoy the space. I had a few nice conversations with other solo travelers that felt the same way, but other than 3 or 4 people, mostly everyone else kept their heads down and in their own world. Not my...
