I recently visited New Amaya Real Indian Food in Barrie with a couple of friends I was meeting after 7–8 years. Coming from Edmonton, I was looking forward to some good food and drinks while catching up. We stayed for about two hours and ordered slowly, starting with two dry chicken appetizers (one skewered, served on a hot plate) along with a margarita and a beer. The presentation was decent, but the taste was average at best — I’d rate the appetizers around 2.5/5, and the margarita was also just average.
For mains, we ordered a chicken curry and a goat curry. The goat curry stood out as the better dish, but overall the portions were quite small. Food quality across the board felt average compared to what I’m used to in Edmonton.
Service was polite but very inefficient. The restaurant uses a button system to call servers, but we later learned their digital watches weren’t charged, so it didn’t work. We had to repeatedly call staff to clear plates, bring fresh ones, and take orders — things that should have been automatic. The washrooms were not very clean, and while they had live music, I personally would have preferred a quieter atmosphere.
Overall, I’d give this restaurant 2 stars. It wasn’t a terrible experience, but the food quality, portion size, and service need improvement to justify a return visit. Locals may see it differently, but for me, it was...
Read moreAMAYA real indian food, Finally had the chance to try some Indian street snacks. Golgappa (pani puri) consists of thin crispy balls filled with potatoes, chickpeas, and onions. When you eat it, you pour in the flavorful water (which supposedly contains mint and other spices) and devour it in one bite. The burst of tangy, spicy, and refreshing flavors is truly appetizing. Sev puri and avocado papdi chaat are somewhat similar; the former consists of thin crispy crackers topped with a generous amount of mashed potatoes, while the latter features crackers topped with avocado, mango, yogurt, and pomegranate—a fusion with Mexican flavors. Both have a delightful balance of sour, spicy, and sweet flavors, and the crackers are simply delicious. Knowing that Indian desserts tend to be extremely sweet, I made sure to pair them with Masala chai for the perfect combination. By the way, the chai was excellent. Warm gulab jamun, rose-flavored sugar balls served with yogurt, were both fragrant and sweet. Mawa cake, soaked in sweet milk, reminded me of something I had at a Mexican restaurant last time. With a small appetite, I didn't opt for a full meal; Indian cuisine seems to mainly consist of butter chicken and various curries, but street snacks are clearly more suited...

Was craving Indian food and had seen a sign for Amaya close to the hwy so decided to give it a try.
Cute little Indian joint in Barrie with kind service and bomb food 👇🏽
What we ordered:
✖️Butter chicken 🐔 ✖️Spicy lamb curry 🐑🌶️ ✖️Aloo Gobi 🌱 ✖️Garlic naan 🧄
Each dish came with rice, so we didn’t need to order a separate rice dish. The portions are small (good to split between two people) but very tasty. I really enjoyed the sweet and spicy mix from the butter chicken and the lamb 👌🏽 Maybe I would have ordered one more garlic naan because I was savoring my last piece, but for 2 people, 3 dishes and one order of naan was just perfect.
My biggest complaint was the floors of the restaurant were pretty disgusting (see video). Clearly the floors had not been sweeped for some time, which was very off putting. Also the little sign on our table where you can press a button to call your sever over was incredibly dirty. The amount of dirty fingers that have likely touched that button was concerning and was disgusting to look at and have on my dining table.
Overall the food here is good, but the sanitary conditions of the restaurant need to be held to much higher standards.
One can only imagine what it’s like inside...
