February 2017 Sunset Grill is one of our favourite breakfast locations for my girlfriend and I. I frequent them in Barrie, Whitby, West Toronto, and Wasga Beach. My girlfriend (I admit is picky) asks to modify Eggs Sunset each time she goes to a location. And for the most part depending on the waitress and willingness of cooks they do it (5 Stars).
However on this one occasion she asked for the same modification. As she does every time, as she has at this very same location before and has been accommodated without incident. But this time, the waitress said, yes no problem. And I observed her have an unusual and lengthy conversation with the cook and came back to confirm, yes absolutely. All is well, she got what she wanted, we're all happy.
So the bill comes and she hands it to me pointing at the items and explains that she itemized my girlfriends order as something that is not Eggs Sunset and itemized a side of bacon separately(my girlfriend does not enjoy peameal and asks to change it to bacon). She explained that doing it this way was cheaper, she leaves the table to continue working. Out of curiosity since I ordered Eggs Sunset un-modified I compared our prices and her meal came to be $0.20 more.
I went to the counter and tried to explain the receipt and clear the confusion. Out of principal I did not feel I owed the $0.20 as I was told there was no problem with modifying the order. If it were not okay, then tell us and I will happily pay an additional $0.20. Out of the many visits to numerous locations including this one, this is the first incident.
The conversation soon degraded into a steadfast argument on how I was wrong, that they never allow modifications at any location because of 'corporate', and that I was in fact saving money when I in fact calculated it clear as day and they chose not to check the prices. I stood there red faced on the receiving end of arrogant condescension by this clerk. I bit my tongue to hold on to the last bit of civility I had and paid the at this point ridiculous bill. If $0.20 causes a restaurant-wide audible argument with only one person raising their voice, it's not worth my time, it's not worth the trouble, have the $0.20.
I will never visit this location again. And I will think twice about any other location. I am dismayed...
Read moreGoing on a bit of a rant here but I was truly shocked at how bad my experience was there on Saturday around 1:00 pm. We walked in for a quick bite before our drive up north, server was polite and nice, we ordered our meals and I ordered a gluten free bread with my meal. I know that there is no dedicated toasted (as we go to the sunset grill on Mapleview all the time) and I asked the server if they could hear the bread up any other way other then the toaster. The server said no problem and shortly came back telling me the chef cannot he's that's bread up any other way...... I politely suggested a few options like the grill, flat top, in a pan or simply under the heat lamp just to make it not frozen, and the server nicely went and suggested it to the cook. Keeping in mind there are currently 4 customers including us in the restaurant and 4 servers and 2 cooks. The server returned and apologized and again the chef couldn't and wouldn't warm the bread for me. I was quite annoyed now as all this was is the the cook being too lazy and rude to warm one piece of bread. Again the server was great and no complaints to her as what is she supposed to do when the cook just keeps saying no. It was horrible customer service from the cooks side and if he actually didn't know how to cook it the. I would not want him cooking em eggs or anything else with that little skill. The worst of all I finnally politely mentioned the other location in barrie does this for me every time without any questions or problems. And he once again said no.
Rant over, but I will not be coming back to this restaurant ever again as I won't give my business to a place that cannot accommodate 1 piece of toast when they are not busy at all. The chef needs to be trained properly on how to accommodate cooking 1 piece of gluten free toast properly for a celiac so that they do not get sick, or just train them on how not to be rediculously lazy and rude to customers which results in your business getting a bad review. Thank you to the server (who was the owners daughter apparently) for being polite and attempting to help me I do...

The Eggs Benedict was excellent; The Hollandaise sauce was buttery and creamy; absolutely fantastic with a generous portion of peameal and three perfectly cooked soft poached eggs on a toasted english muffin. The home fries on the side were golden, crispy, and tender one day; mostly white on another occasion, but were still good, and today they were burned while some were white.
The orange juice was cold and had a great flavor; I really enjoyed their ice coffee.
The Monte Cisco was delicious with a generous portion of ham smothered in white cheese between two French toast; syrup on the side.

The service staff was a very nice lady who was well kept & attentive to the customers. Their service was very quick, from being seated, ordering & receiving my breakfast; I was in and out in less than 45 minutes, and it was reasonably busy.
The establishment is clean and bright, with a soothing decor.
