The Keg, the Mecca of steakhouses for those of us who are, let's say, culinarily inclined towards "low-effort, high-taste" dining experiences. Why do I say lazy? Because stepping into any Keg restaurant is like going on a blind date with a trusty, dependable friend – you know they won't let you down, no matter the occasion. Now, the atmosphere at The Keg is a bit like déjà vu. It's like that cozy feeling of watching reruns of your favorite TV show – you know exactly what you're getting, and you love it. You walk in, and suddenly you feel like the center of attention in a high-class environment. It's like being the star of your own reality show, but in reality, it's just a well-practiced, dependable cookie-cutter facade. But let's get to the meat of the matter – the food! The steaks at The Keg are like the Tom Hanks of the culinary world – reliable, versatile, and universally loved. Whether you're on a tight budget or willing to splurge, you can bet your taste buds it's going to be damn good. And let's not forget the veggies; they come out cooked to perfection. Even the pickiest eater will raise a fork in applause. The Keg's service in Barrie is on par, but it's like your favorite TV show with a slow release schedule. It's the neighbor who smiles in passing but never invites you over for a BBQ. It's like a cozy blanket; it's there to keep you warm, but you wouldn't mind it giving you a comforting hug every so often. If only the servers checked up on you as diligently as your grandmother checking if you're eating enough. So, when you embark on your culinary journey at The Keg, think of it as a sitcom marathon – you know the characters, you know the punchlines, and it's all so darn comforting. And while the servers might not hover like helicopter grandmas, the food will have you applauding like a theater critic at a Broadway premiere.

In the past three nights I have reviewed three restaurants primarily for they filet mignon. One upscale Toronto eatery and two in Barrie. By far the hands down winner was the Keg.The experience was also the most positive. We arrived at our scheduled reservation time and were immediately seated. The restaurant was full and buzzing with activity. Were were greeted by our waitress Emma right away who was pleasant and attentive the whole night. We had heard that the French Onion soup was also very good and started with that. Indeed the soup was excellent. Just the right amount of cheese, not overly drowned with bread and a very flavourful broth. We also ordered a baked goat cheese from a special addition to their regular menu. This was a menu celebrating the Kegs 50th year in business. This dish was so spectacular that I suggest they add it to their everyday menu along with the baked brie they already have there. We ordered a 7oz and a 10oz filet along with fully dressed baked potatoes. The food arrived hot and was cooked perfectly to our individual requested levels. The vegetables on the side were also perfect. They were still crisp to the bite and flavourful. Usually restaurants get this easy part wrong and serve soggy limp vegetables. The potato was also perfect. No hint of the skin being burnt or any undercooked flesh. The filets come wrapped in bacon which we immediately removed. The last thing I want to taste is bacon with such a perfectly cooked piece of high end beef. I'm not sure why they cook it this way but it is not necessary to overwhelm the taste of the filet withe the taste of bacon in my opinion. Some may like this and to each his/her own. The Keg is my new definite go to for a great filet mignon. The price of the filet in all three reviews were about the same. Only the Keg offered a 10oz version.

Was really hoping to break a long standing curse of poorly cooked steaks this time at The Keg, but as usual, they didn't fail to disappoint. I always order rare. In fact, I take extra effort to nicely explain to the servers, that I am expecting rare, and prefer my steak VERY rare. Not blue, just rare please and thank-you. Years ago I would consistently order blue, which would invariably translate into rare on the plate, so I was happy. Every so often though, you would find a capable grill man and you would actually get blue, which is not the best for the majority of the cuts served at The Keg. The meal tasted fine, the cut of tenderloin was nicely prepared, but the sear marks quickly told me it had been on the grill at least 3 minutes too long. Four turns of a 10oz tenderloin on a commercial grill will invariably get you medium, which, as it turns out, was what I got. I did bring it to the attention of the server, and then the floor manager, and received the expected cordial, professional, but distinctly uncommitted response. Some restaurant staff are good at projecting the attitude that customers "like" to complain. Case and point here. They would "see what they could do" with the bill, thanks very much. They did offer to replace it, which, is nice, but sitting there while the rest of my family eats, does not make for an enjoyable dinner. It did taste good, and was not ruined, it was just not how I asked it to be cooked. A suggestion for this location. Train your staff better because when someone orders the best, and most expensive cut of beef on your menu, then very nicely, but specifically asks for it to be cooked a certain way, you can rest assured that if it shows up overcooked, you will get a disappointed customer.. For starters, you should care.

We’ve been going to the Barrie keg for many years , especially on New Year’s Eve as it is my wife’s birthday on the 31 st. This year we went on New Year’s Day, as we couldn’t get a reservation for New Year’s Eve. I must say we were very disappointed this visit. it was my wife’s 60th birthday celebration and it ended in disaster. The food was subpar, they made multiple mistakes on the orders ,and we had multiple managers coming over to apologize and interrupt our dinner. I was so frustrated that I asked the last manager that came over to please stop and we will discuss it later as I just wanted to eat my cold dinner and not send back another dinner, and try to have a family dinner together. These restaurants think they just comp a dinner for free and have no other repercussions, as far as I’m concerned, sending a dinner back and getting a new one does not fix the situation as people sit there and eat while other people cannot. I understand mistakes happen and we are all human, but this evening was a total disaster. We ended up leaving the restaurant all pissed off at each other because I was trying to stand up for us and my family, unfortunately like true Canadians they didn’t want to cause a fuss. I personally will not be going back to this keg ever again and I’m very disappointed in this restaurant. for $700 I could go to multiple other restaurants in Barrie and receive way better food and service. I had two $100 gift cards from the keg left over upon leaving and I literally gave them away when I left the restaurant because I would not need them any further. One thing I would recommend is the Manager’s not rushing over every time there’s an issue and interrupting your dinner. They should just leave it up to the server and worry about it later after dinner is over.maybe that’s something they could revisit as it’s not the managers fault ,they’re just doing as they are instructed to...

We recently dined at The Keg and had a mostly enjoyable experience, but one incident left a sour note during what could have been an exceptional evening.

First, the positives: the food was absolutely outstanding. Every dish was prepared to perfection. From the appetizers to the mains, everything was flavourful, fresh, and beautifully presented. Our waitress was also fantastic—attentive, friendly, and genuinely eager to make our evening special. She went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and had everything we needed.

She even sensed that something was wrong after we had an interaction with the manager, Nicole, and took the initiative to have Nicole come over and apologize. Unfortunately, the apology didn’t come across as sincere, which only added to our frustration.

The incident occurred when my fiancé, who is visually impaired and relies on his guide dog, was seated with us at a booth designed for six people, where we had squeezed in seven. His guide dog was calmly lying at the side of the table, but instead of accommodating the situation, the manager passively-aggressively asked us to move the dog under the table. This was not only impractical, given the cramped space, but unfair. A simple solution—moving the couple seated next to us slightly to create more room—was not even considered.

While the food and service were excellent, the lack of sensitivity in handling the situation with my fiancé and his guide dog was disappointing. Restaurants should be a welcoming space for all patrons, including those with disabilities, and more effort could have been made to make us feel that way.

Overall, The Keg offers incredible food and stellar waitstaff, but management’s approach to accessibility and their handling of such situations need improvement. I hope they take this feedback constructively to ensure all diners feel...
