Burnaby Korean Comfort Food Spot | Busan Daeji Gukbap Review

Dae-Ji is a popular Vancouver-based Korean cutlet house that specializes in deep-fried cutlets of various meats as well as hamburger steaks (similar to Hamburg steaks). The location on North Road in Burnaby is on the second floor of a busy mini mall just south of Lougheed Hwy. The interior here is fairly spacious and it wasn’t very busy during my weekday lunch hour sojourn. The decor here is more basic than high-end with plastic cups and water jugs at the table. I wound up ordering their Cheese Hamburger Steak ($13.99) which comes with 2 hefty portions of hamburger steak topped with cheese and accompanied with rice, macaroni salad, corn, crunchy cabbage, pickled radish, and gravy. The thick hamburger steaks were quite filling but a bit on the dry side in the middle (nothing that a dose of gravy couldn’t fix). I did like the cheesy pull on top of the hamburger but I would have preferred if the cheese was on the inside of the hamburger instead of on top. On a subsequent visit about 3 months later, I noticed that the restaurant was much busier during the weekday lunch hour. The thing that I like about this restaurant is that you can mix-and-match your order and I wound up ordering their Combo A ($15.99) with a Mushroom Hamburger Steak and a Shrimp and Cheese Pork Cutlet with chili sauce. This meal also comes with their regular assortment of sides such as macaroni salad, corn, crunchy cabbage topped with a Thousand Island type of dressing, pickled radish, and rice. The thing about Dae-Ji is they stick to what they know and what they know best is how to make deep-fried cutlets and hamburger steaks. The Mushroom Hamburger Steak is thick and juicy (almost in the shape of a large meatball) but tender. Meanwhile, their cutlet is perfectly fried with a nice crispness on the outside and then covered with melted cheese. If the chili sauce wasn’t spicy enough for you, they top off the pork cutlet with jalapeño slices which gives you a serious kick. I guess Combo A is my go-to pick here… I like having the ability to pick and choose different things. Here’s their Pineapple Hamburger Steak and Pizza Pork Cutlet as well as the Pineapple Hamburger Steak and Curry Chicken Cutlet. The food usually comes out fairly quickly but they do slow down a bit when it gets super busy here.

Located at the Korean Town Centre in Burnaby, BC, this restaurant is right smack in the middle of a large Korean Community in the Cities of Burnaby-Coquitlam border. The restaurant serves various authentic & popular dishes, hotpots, noodles, bbq meats, fried chicken etc. Since we saw that they had KamJa Tang ( Pork Bone Hotpot ) advertised on their Store front, we thought to give them a try. Ordered the large size as we thought we can always take home, but didn't realize it was really really huge, with 6 or 7 pieces of large meaty pork bones, tonnes of vegetables, Korean Rice Cake (2 kinds), Korean Instant Noodles, Potatoes, beansprouts! Since we know that we had no way that we can finish this whole hot pot, we thought we might as well try their KFC ( Korean Fried Chicken ), ordered the Original Bone-in, and they were outstanding! The crust was light, not that crispy but still has a nice crunch to it! Meat were cooked thoroughly and still very juicy! The original was very lightly seasoned, so I added some kimchee to spike it up and it was delicious! All in all, the food was great here and service was friendly, our lady server even made sure we are ok to order the Large size hotpot, so it was totally our own decision to go ahead, and she also let us know that the chicken will take 20mins to prepare, I thought that was very nice of her, and when we asked for a take out container for the rest of the hotpot, she even gave us some extra broth! Since this is one of the restaurants at this mall, we will for sure come back to try other items and also other restaurants as well, with Covid, we are not able to travel out of the country, exploring various ethic food scenes in different parts of town can be fun as well!

Would you please fix/renovate your washroom and do not leave a cart with full of dirty dishes on the corridor? It was gross and smelled gross, too. I can live with the old chairs and tables, but your washroom needs to be changed. -----------Thank you.

Great Korean bossam! you can enjoy two kinds of meat and flavor in one dish. The meat portion is large for 3 hungry adults and it is under $40 and the meat was fresh, no dry, dark colored meat at all! (presentation and side dishes could be improved, but who cares much for $40 fresh meat for 3?) All soup dishes here are good, too. There is no MSG I could notice, enough soup and meats on each bowl, (the bowl itself here is actually larger than ones at other places with the same or higher price tags.)and they serve chives which get along with any soup and dishes here. From meat dishes they have on the menu, I can tell they make own pork bone soup here. Among many in the area, this is one of my regular places for both drinks and eats. I also saw they are making good shaped dumplings at the sight. Ventilation is okay.(better side, your clothes won't smell that bad after eating here.) This place is a good, homey place and servers are all good to us every...
