As a Malaysian I wanted to give this a 5 star so bad 😭 especially since they’ve got butter chicken (not the Indian kind) omg.
I ordered via UberEATS and today we ordered nasi lemak, roti canai, mango sago, butter chicken, and ngiu chap.
Overall I felt like the flavour was there however a little lacking. I wish it was a little bit stronger 😅
Nasi Lemak - 4.5/5, the fried chicken was good, the peanuts and anchovies were perfect, but the sambal man…. The sambal… that’s where it was slightly lacking 😭 I understand we’re in Calgary and there’s a majority Caucasian population but if there’s a possibility to have a “Asian version” and “white spice version” that would be great 😅 ended up only eating half the rice so that it could be strong enough of a blend.
Roti Canai - 5/5. No complaints. But if we could also have a dhal version dip in the future that would be nice hehe. I used to mix both my curry and dhal at the mamak lots so that would be nice :)
Ngiu chap - 3/5. honestly this one was mediocre, but the beef balls were yummy :)
Mango sago - 5/5. Love love love. No complaints.
Butter chicken - 3/5. the flavor isn’t strong enough in my opinion :( I was SO EXCITED for this but unfortunately this did not hit the mark for me. The flavor was very mild and I guess I had high expectations from jibril in SS15 that I used to go to all the time back home :(
But it’s ok, I understand the restaurant is still new so I’ll check back in after a couple of months and see...
Read moreWe were really looking forward to trying a new Malaysian restaurant in Calgary but unfortunately, Makan fell very short of expectations. We had a late lunch on Saturday with friends and kids. We all ordered separately per family at around 1:20pm and we did not receive the last of our order until 2:40pm. The restaurant has been opened for a few months now and I would have expected service and cook time to be much more efficient. Although the servers were friendly, this did not make up for how long the food took or the mediocre quality of the food. We had ordered the Roti with Curry, Butter Chicken with Rice, Beef Noodle Soup, Sarawak Laksa and Milo Dinosaur drink. The best thing of all this was, sadly, the drink! Both the Laksa and Beef Noodle Soup tasted authentic enough but lacked in quantity for the $19.50 and $16.50 price tags each. The Beef Noodle Soup, in particular, had mostly noodle and only 3 small beef balls and 2 very small beef pieces - not at all like the photo on the menu. I have not tried Malaysian Butter Chicken before (even when I was in KL) so I cannot speak to the taste but personally, I did not enjoy the spices used in the sauce. Unfortunately, we will not be returning for a second visit. I do hope the restaurant finds a way to improve their processes and takes into consideration feedback/reviews...
Read moreWe went there for dinner as my girlfriend wanted some spicy food. We have been wanting to try this new Malaysian restaurant since they took over the place.
We had the Laksa (Sarawak) and the Nasi Lemak with chicken wings. For a drink, we also ordered Teh C with Leong Fun. I can only compare the food that we had in Banana Leaf as I have never been to Malaysia and they were very good. The laksa was full of seafood - shrimps, fish tofu, fishballs and reg tofu. They had a real calamansi and samba on the side for dipping. They used bihon for the noodles and It wasn't overcooked so there was a bite to it. My first time to have Nasi Lemak and yes, they were spicy/sweet and definitely was very satisfying for my gf's craving! (Yes, my gf is white and Calgary-born) The chicken wings on its own were nice and very crispy. Lastly the drink was nice on a very hot day. I loved texture and chew on those balls and jelly 😋 ha! It was very hot though inside the place. If they can either push the AC up or simply open the doors/windows, it would have been much better. Definitely will be back and try the other food and drinks! Wish...
