First time here, got the Pork Belly Bennie, Miso Maple Bacon Bennie, and Red Velvet Waffles.
Starting with service and atmosphere, we were greeted with a friendly and energetic server in a cozy and aesthetically pleasing space. They constantly checked up on us and were familiar enough with the menu to provide sound recommendations. The café’s internal decoration was very welcoming and relaxing, although the club-like music could maybe use some reconsideration and the plants needed some extra love.
As for the food itself, we loved everything from start to finish. First of all, the ability to accommodate a gluten sensitivity by replacing the bennie base was much appreciated. For the pork belly, it seemed to be slightly overcooked but the flavours were there. Having it tossed in the glaze and some additional hollandaise might elevate it even further! The Miso Maple Bacon was good although there was not much miso taste. I got it as it sounded like an interesting flavour combo but it mainly tasted like a candied maple bacon. As for the sides, the Japa Fries were great. We couldn’t tell what made the “Umami” fries deserve their name aside from the very flavourful garlic aioli dipping sauce but the fries themselves were just above-average, double-fried and salted fries.
Lastly, the waffles were dense and had a nice red velvet cake texture. Great whipped cream and berry compote. The only thing we would change about the dish is to remove the bananas as it is such an overpowering flavour that completely takes away from all the good things going on.
Will recommend to all my friends...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Sammie Cafe, and let me tell you, their sandwiches are nothing but spectacular! I tried the Bombay Hot Honey Fried Chicken with wedges, and every bite was a flavor explosion. The heat from the honey fried chicken, combined with the crunch of the cucumber, made for a perfectly balanced dish. The addition of the cucumber really tied everything together. I also tried the Spicy Jerk Chicken sandwich, and it wasn’t what I was expecting at all—packed with so much flavor, and the genius idea of wrapping it in naan bread took it to another level. The naan gave it a warm, pillowy texture that complemented the spice of the jerk chicken in the best possible way. To wash it all down, I tried both the Caramel and the Vanilla Iced Latte. As someone who’s not usually a fan of vanilla, I was shocked to find that the Vanilla Iced Latte actually outshone the caramel in flavor and richness. It was smooth and just the right amount of sweet—definitely one of the best iced vanilla lattes I’ve had in a while! As for sides, I got the fries with garlic mayo with my jerk chicken sandwich, and wow, they completely beat the wedges in my opinion. The garlic mayo was the perfect partner to the fries! I’ll definitely be back to Sammie Cafe. From the sandwiches to the drinks, everything was amazing, and I can't wait to try more of their...
Read moreWe were walking by on our way to another restaurant when we came upon this place. Pulled up the menu online and decided to try it out!
It's a cozy 7 table restaurant. We arrived shortly after 1pm and snagged a nice corner spot looking onto the street.
My wife tried their hot chocolate festival entry "Chocolate Covered Banana Split" which was a strawberry hot chocolate with whip cream and a banana bread cake pop dipped in chocolate with a cherry on top. I was happy to have a local root beer from Annex Brewery.
I had the spicy jerk chicken sandwich which featured well seasoned chicken thighs, scotch bonnet peppers and coleslaw on garlic naan bread. I much preferred the naan bread over a normal bun as it made the filling the star but thought it should have been spicier. I got the umami fries as my side where the fries were perfectly crispy/salty but the aioli could have been stronger flavored.
My wife had the mushroom avocado bennie which looked like it could have been featured on the cover of a magazine. She loved the brown butter hollandaise sauce and how many mushrooms were on it (and how they were cooked). The temperature of her food was warmish, far from hot and the bun was getting soggy underneath as if it was sitting there a while until mine was down.
It did take quite some time to get our food from ordering but we...
