I have been a member since 1958 and I currently sit on the Board, so I am biased. I can't give five stars because nothing is perfect, and there's always room for improvement. The Glencoe currently has an approximate seven year waiting list for membership and, along with the Calgary Winter Club, is one of the two more desirable private sports facilities in the Calgary region.
The Glencoe was established in 1931. It underwent a complete renovation in 1963 following a devastating fire the previous year. The Club continued to thrive through the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s with continuing improvements and renovations.
The Glencoe is currently undergoing a $22 million Dollar CDN renovation and expansion project which is expected to be completed by April, 2016. This will add approximately 52 additional parking stalls to the existing facility and provide an almost doubling of the fitness area space.
A new doubles squash court was opened in September, 2015 along with a completely renovated singles court, bringing the total number of singles courts to six. The Glencoe will host the Canadian doubles squash championship in the spring of 2016.
Other sports at the Glencoe Club include swimming, badminton, ice skating, tennis, bowling, curling and bridge.
The Glencoe Club has a wholly-owned affiliate, the Glencoe Golf and Country Club, located west of Calgary on Highway 8 (Glenmore Trail SW). This club was established in 1984 and features 45 holes, a clubhouse and a full driving range with practice and...
Read moreI am a member of the Glenco and this review is directly at the gym. I am a frequent visitor to the weight room and all facilities available at the glenco gym. Just recently I was going to hit a workout when an employee kicked me out as soon as I walked in for wearing crocs. I understand I need proper footwear but I’ve heard other people having complaints with this employee as well. She gave me zero first offence grace and immediately got rid of me like I was fodder. A couple months back I was on the barbell, deadlift to be exact. I am more than aware you have to be 16+ to use it. Which I am. I was doing my sets when the same girl as just now asked for my age. I responded 16, my current age at the time. She then asked for my glenco card to verify my age, I responded no I don’t have it on me and I was kicked out of the gym by her. I’ve been kicked out a total of 3 times by her, the 3rd time being for a use of a tripod to record my form and to review it to correct my back posture. I was kicked out right away as well. I hope the staff (this women in particular) to get a lesson on Respect, hospitality and all round kindness. I do not appreciate any of this and I am considering a cancellation with my membership. Thank you, and I hope you pressure action towards...
Read moreAttended Easter brunch this year and was extremely disappointed with the experience. I can honestly say there would likely be less children running around the dining room at a Chucky Cheese. I've never seen anything like it. There were several tables of unattended children sprinkled throughout. No parents to be seen anywhere. I sympathize with the service staff who had to essentially babysit children while also doing their jobs. Food was absolutely mediocre! The Glencoe has sterling reputation so perhaps my expectations were too high. Food was on par within your average neighborhood pub. Totally fine but underwhelming in the extreme.
For what it's worth there was also virtually no COVID precautions whatsoever. I only saw 2 staff members wearing masks. No social distancing (tables were nearly on top of each other). Minimal sanitization stations. I understand that restrictions are lifted but this felt kind of gross.
Would...
