I found Ashoka by accident on the evening of October 10th. I was staying at a hotel in Langley, and needed to find something to eat. The food was absolutely amazing! The chicken in my biryani was tender, as was the fish in my fish masala. I also ordered potato naan - which was very nice. The chicken in biriyani is almost always notoriously overcooked. No matter how good the restaurant is - as I get it everywhere - it is not tender.
This is the best Indian food I've found on the Lower Mainland, at least this night it was. I think it might have been better than anything I ate in India, even. No small claim. I ordered medium spice and there was more of a bite than I expected... just so you know. It was amazing.
The only thing (I'm not sure what happened so I won't down-vote them) is that after I asked for my bill I never got it. I just went to the counter after another couple had. It's a small place and an older couple had come in and were either making a large order or asking all sorts of questions? Not sure. Both of the young servers looked very confused and stood listening for ten-fifteen minutes. When I went to pay they were not as warm to me as they had been before the couple had come in. They had been amazing before, plus the food was so good, so it was hard to be offended.
The three items were $35.70 and lasted me several meals. Thank god I was at a hotel for four days and that I had access to...
Read moreThis used to be my favourite Indian restaurant in Langley. My brother and I decided to try the buffet today, April 25 2025. The food is of great quality, however they do not refill the dishes. Today they were serving Lamb Rogan Josh, it was delectable. The problem was there was only 10 pieces of meat for the entire restaurant. I only took 2 pieces, thinking that they would replenish it. Guess what? No they did not replenish it, when I asked about more meat, they told me NO!! The buffet sign should read, this is a sauce buffet only. Once the meat is gone, tough luck. So... once I ate a little more butter chicken and we were ready to pay, out comes more Lamb. This is not how to run a restaurant!!! Because of the failure to replenish the food, we may not return. The waitress was extremely condescending and rude.
P.S. The owners response to my review is not true. The restaurant will not fill up the meat dishes. I do not eat carbohydrates nor vegetables. My family of 10 members supported this restaurant for the past 15 years, even through Covid. We ordered takeout at least 4 times a month. But something changed when the new owners took over, it's not the same as it once was. Because of the owners response to my review, we will no longer be supporting this...
Read moreI literally didn't even get as far as ordering. I went to order on Uber Eats, but the Ashoka page didn't indicate which items were vegan (I don't know why UE doesn't streamline this for all restaurants - some use "V" as vegetarian, some use "V" as vegan, and some don't mention anything. Very frustrating!). So I called the restaurant directly to ask which, if any items are vegan friendly. She started rattling off chicken dishes! Huh?? I told her chicken is an animal and NOT vegan. She then said butter chicken, and again started rattling off more chicken dishes... again, I told her, neither CHICKEN or BUTTER are vegan. So incredibly unhelpful/uneducated, that I didn't trust even ordering! They lost a first time, and potentially ongoing customer, as I really do love Indian food. Please educate your staff on what the different food preferences & allergens are (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.), and the dishes that correlate accordingly. Besides lifestyle or religious preferences, there are many people out there that may be allergic to something, and that can end very...
