I've been eating Norms Deli since I was a kid. I have always loved the food. I live in Whitby now and order it once and awhile through Uber Eats (and I pay a HUGE premium to do so--on me obviously). The mac salad is still unbeatable. The cabbage rolls are pretty good still...I have noticed a pretty steep decline in the quality and flavor of their pierogies..and I'm a bit disappointed sometimes when they run out of something and auto-sub something else without notifying me through the app...but until today I haven't let that be enough to want to say anything. Today I ordered mac salad...sausage ...an apple fritter and cabbage rolls. I immediately got a notification that they were out of fritters (no problem...removed it)..As you can imagine it takes awhile to get here. I received sausage..cabbage rolls...and potato and egg salad. Problem is that I'm allergic to egg white (and didn't get any notification of a swap). I called the store and a young girl answered. When I explained the situation she said "ya well we're out of macaroni salad so we sent that ". When I told her Im allergic to egg white she scoffed/sighed and said "well I dont know what you want me to do about that" in a very annoyed tone. Clearly an owner/manager overheard this because in the background she asked what the issue was..and immediately said to tell me just to put in for a credit (not ideal but totally acceptable under the circumstances..thank you). What I AM very disappointed about was the tone and reaction that I got from the girl who answered the phone. No polite apology...not pleasant at all...just annoyed that I was calling and not just accepting of what they had sent instead. I recommend this place to people all of the time and tell them that its worth it to pay crazy prices charged by Uber to get it (not Norms delis doing). Please speak to your staff about customer service. This interaction has...
Read moreLiving in Bowmanville for 10 years now many times I've heard of the legacy of Norm's Delicatessen.
My wife suggested we stop by for lunch and, I have to say, we couldn't have been more impressed with the fantastic, clearly homemade taste of the food.
We ordered eight pierogies, one cabbage roll and a chicken snitzel sandwich.
We first tried the chicken snitzel sandwich and it was great. I was very impressed with the crunchy exterior of the chicken. It had a great texture and flavour. I had the hot mustard added onto the sandwich. It, too, tasted great and had just the right amount of heat.
Came with a couple pickle spears as well and they were some great dills.
We next tried the cabbage roll and, even though we enjoyed it, we both agreed the temperature could've been much warmer. We also found that the quantity of meat inside was lackluster so it was mostly just rice. This didn't deter us from enjoying it I just don't think I'd order the cabbage roll again.
Finally, and the food item I had heard people rave about for years, the pierogies. Exceptional! The filling was plentiful and had a great cheddar and potato flavour. The dough containing that great filling was also delicious. I'd definitely recommend getting some sour cream with the pierogies because they were an excellent compliment to an already delicious food item.
Overall the experience was fantastic. I can see myself stopping by just to grab some pierogies to go. They were that good.
Fantastic place and worthy of all that high regard I had heard...
Read moreWe’ve been loyal customers at Norm’s for quite some time now the pierogies have always been a go-to comfort food for us, and we’ve enjoyed coming back regularly.
Unfortunately, this time was different. When we stopped by recently, the service was noticeably off. The young blonde girl at the counter seemed uninterested and was giving attitude right from the start. We asked for onions with our pierogies, which we always get, but when we got home, there were none. On top of that, while cashing us out, she made several mistakes including adding three cabbage rolls we didn’t order. We had to point it out and get it corrected, and even then, her attitude didn’t change.
We did call in afterward to let someone know about the experience, and all we got was a quick “sorry about that… um Okay,” which didn’t feel very sincere or helpful.
We really like this spot, and it’s frustrating to feel let down like this especially when we’ve always supported the business. Hopefully this was just a one-off, but it’s something that should...
