Listen, this place isn't much to look at, really. The interior is dated, it's attached to a hotel that looks its age, it's across from the super old Northgate Mall; no doubt it's not going to win any awards for view or decor or ambience.
But the food is way better than appearances would lead you to expect. It's simple fare, but it's done well. A hot turkey sandwich with real roasted turkey and decent gravy, pizza that looks and tastes homemade, breakfasts worth getting up for. Reasonably priced and with something on the menu for everyone.
Just keep in mind that the portion sizes are huge. Chances are, you won't be having an appetizer or dessert here unless you're sharing.
I wouldn't recommend it for a date spot, but for a family dinner? It's a great choice. Most of the usual clientele are older--probably because there's a few senior's centres nearby--so it's usually quiet enough even when it's busy, which I appreciate. I hate a restaurant that's so loud you can barely hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation.
Seems like the owner is almost always holding court at the back booth with friends and family--or at least she has been everytime I've been there--but the servers are nice enough. Friendly, no-nonsense service with a smile. Or you can skip the dine-in experience entirely and go with Skip because they were on there...
Read moreThe breakfast was good. Nothing spectacular, but fast to get the food.
We stayed at the hotel and on the first morning the service was good.
The second morning it was TERRIBLE! We were served attitude with a side of breakfast. We made a reservation for a large wedding group (20) in their overflow room and when we arrived we were told the servers didn't know & we'd have to wait for Rosa (I think that's her name) to get in to figure it out. 5 min later I was told they were setting it up for us, but it was almost 20min after that that we actually got a table. The server took our order, with attitude, poured coffees & spilled them on some of us, and basically threw the other drinks on the tables. We requested a new server, and Rosa came in and nothing changed, except some of the late comers got attitude from Rosa.
Also, the night prior to this a bunch of us tried to order room service (we would have even come down to pick it up) and couldn't get thru. When a couple went downstairs to order, they found the phones were literally off the hook.
Long story short...unless you want attitude don't bother...
Read moreThis restaurant is attached to The Rosslyn Inn and Suites. I am a regular customer and I usually order food to take up to my room. This morning I went in to order, and when the waitress came to take my order, she accused me of stealing silverware. I was absolutely floored by this. She said that a customer saw me do it. The only thing I put in my pocket was my cellphone. I asked her if she wanted to search me and she declined but still insisted that I did, a second waitress said I did also. I turned my pockets inside out to show them that I didn't. I asked to speak to the manager, and she said she didn't care whether I did or not. No apologies just, excuses. Needless to say I didn't order. I felt humiliated. This is not a good look for either the restaurant or the hotel! I am a regular customer of the Rosslyn and the Canyon. I will never order from them again and don't even want to stay in the hotel just for that reason. It's not a good feeling to be wrongly accused of theft! No apologies either. An apology would have gone a long way...
