The door is always locked because of a past break in, so you’ll need to knock. When the man answers, he looks you up and down before letting you in. Inside, the selection is extremely limited. I grabbed a small bag of ketchup chips, one of the few options, but they had expired in August last year, almost a year ago. I also picked up a chocolate bar, only to find it was expired too. Check under the flap for the best before date.

When I pointed it out, he told me, “Best before isn’t the same as expired.” Technically true, but grocery stores aren’t supposed to be selling food past the best before date unless it’s clearly marked as clearance. And even then, I’m not sure it’s allowed. Sure, the food might still be edible, but that’s a pretty low bar to set. The food bank gives out items past the best before date, not retail stores.

He took the chips off the shelf, but I’d be curious to know if he put them back...

A friendly, locally-owned (for all the folks out there saying 'shop local'!) convenience store.

You can get snacks, staple foods, coffee, lottery tickets, and if you need to send money/pay bills they offer that service as well.

This is not a 7-11 or other large chain; it is a neighbourhood shop that is part of the community and I am proud of that fact.

The owner actually works at the shop, and is so warm and kind. I really appreciate the side service he provides as a package pick up location (for those of us in the downtown core that don't have access to transportation to the depots on the city outskirts this is a blessing), and make a point of purchasing something whenever I pick up.

Me:Hi, how much are your cans of pop? Store owner: $1.40 Me: Oh, ok, I'll just take this bag of chips (small bag) Store owner: That'll be $2.50 Me: How much? Oh, that's ok. Store owner: This is a convenience store! That means convenient! Me: What? Store owner: This is a convenience store man. That's why the price. Me: We'll, just about everywhere else they are $1.70. BTW, I didn't need the attitude. I wasn't going to say anything. I was polite. Just not going to spend $2.50 on a small bag of chips. Have a nice day. Store owner: F#! off man. F#: off.

Seriously, absolutely unjustified behaviour. Nothing like be told to F off after being polite and...
