Place Vanier's Gathering Student Residence Dinning Hall is one of the three dining halls available on the UBC campus. It is the farthest dining hall compared to the other two. After entering the building, you will have to take a flight of stairs to get to the dining hall. The food available at Place Vanier comes from a variety of different cultures. Everyone will find something good to eat the dining hall. The dining hall can sit 200-300 people. It is a buffet style dining hall and you can get as much food you can eat. There is a salad bar and custom sandwich making station. There is a burgers, tacos, pork bun and pork belly ramen station. Food changes from time to time. It is best to check Nutrislice, the online menu app, to see what food the dining hall is serving before paying. The dining hall building has big windows overlooking the court yard of Place Vanier. You also have different kinds of seats like the Café style seats and also the long dining hall tables. During regular hours like mornings from 8-9am, lunch from 12-1pm, and dinner from 7-9pm, you will find lots of people there. You can avoid the traffic by avoiding these common times or arriving earlier to skip the potential line-up for food. The presentation of the dish is average. The portions are small. Food is placed on the counter which may get cold and unclean. Food quality tastes ok, but the servers are more concerned about getting as much food out to as many students and people as possible. During peak hours, the place becomes hectic. Food also is warm, not hot after peak times. Staff there are friendly and kind. Washrooms are downstairs, separate from the dining hall.

I really like the food here except for being repetitive. I love Fresh Fare the most but they don’t change menu as often. I Iove the overnight oats, avocado toast and fajita bowl. A really good vegetarian station. Smoothie is my go to! Love the one with yoghurt, blueberries, chia seed, etc. Soup is pretty good too! They rotate all the time but I like their chicken soup, vegetables and legume curry, whatever bean soup, etc. Gather has too much hate haha. It’s actually one of the healthiest and cheapest residence food among all the three. I wish they have more cooked green vegetables. They always have potatoes and squash but they don’t have enough broccoli, spinach, green beans, etc. Grill station is pretty good and they change menu around 2-4 weeks. Salmon burger is decent. I wish their chicken burger is cheaper. Latino is also my favourite. The Havana bowl is pretty good but sometimes they don’t season the chicken or tofu enough. Home cooking is also one of my favourite because they rotate the food daily. They have similar food every week. The vegetable lasagna with garlic bread is so good! Not a lot of cheese and love the sauce. Butter chicken is not really good imo. Sandwich station is alright except they don’t have the press!!! Please we def need the press for sandwich especially for those who order with cheese. Simply local is a lot of people’s favourite. Not too expensive unless you get a main with two sides (around 12-14?). They serve beef brisket, pork chop, chicken breast, salmon and a vegetarian day every week.

They offer a great variety of food, including Latino, vegan, burgers, sushi-inspired, world (rotates often), baked goods, salads, and soups. Everything is fresh and there are some interesting things to try. Portions are usually pretty filling for me. As with other UBC dining halls/markets, prices run a little high. Also it's hard to find a time that every station is open - stations will often close unexpectedly for the day or even for a few hours during the day.

8/10 days they have decent to good food. Open Kitchen runs out of food often and this year both Open and Feast have been using paper/plastic plates and bowls... which automatically puts Gather on top imo. But honestly, they have so many options that you're bound to find something you like, regardless of any dietary restrictions. They're very accommodating of your needs in that way. Their chicken has been well-cooked so far this year as well, whereas I've heard Feast and Open have already had some issues. I 10000% recommend their pasta puttanesca and their kimchi bao, but the food rotates between dining halls so if Vanier doesn't have good food one day, it's because Orchard or Totem has...
