I really don’t know who is reviewing this place?? It’s really gone downhill since I last went in 2017. I tried it multiple times, not just once. Trying veggie sandwich = tahini in a sandwich? Offensive to tahini lmao as a Lebanese person I’m seriously confused. Plus the zucchini was undercooked; why would they have crunchy zucchini and still say to themselves, “yes, let’s still say the veggie sandwiches are available for people to order”? Jeremy = used to be amazing. I think they got lower quality meat cause now it tastes like sweaty animal. Like just animal fat taste. Plus way less meat than before. Miss their old aioli and old sandwiches Turkey sandwich = the most disappointing. Their old sandwich was simple in the best way— just what you wanted. The spicy mayo paired amazing with their simple crunchy bread and lettuce, homemade-style pickles, and great turkey used in the right amount plus good veggies. Now they make it with an unnecessarily elaborate bread and very sour, probably store-bought pickles… it’s all you can taste. Got the tiniest bit of turkey ever. It was so expensive too. Made me feel so ripped off and it wasn’t a one time thing. Coffee = always sucked. And yes, I know coffee, lmao. Pastries = actually good! But I mean not even that good just reasonable in terms of how much they’re worth the price. Banana bread and peanut butter cookies are probably the best from the selection. They had way better ingredients before, and way better quality control. I feel like their employees cared more too. Based on everything, it kind of feels like owners and employees gave up on the business and are just riding on the café’s privileged location on campus to secure a pay-check. What a shame. Wish they would have had their old menu. I visited for a month and came often thinking my experiences were flukes, but after 6 disappointing visits I realized I was just wasting my time and money. Why fix something that isn’t broken? Their old veggie and turkey sandwiches were the best I’ve ever had! :( their menu was great from salads to soups to sandwiches to pastries (not coffee though). Also their middle-aged barista who always wears a baseball cap (I forget his name) has gotten progressively meaner throughout the years; he kinda acts like he hates everything and everyone at this point; the place is just a bad vibe...
Read moreIconic coffee shop at UBC. The staff is really chill and friendly so the vibe is great, and the food/drink is good all around. In particular they have some of my favourite scones around. Their veggie sandwich is very very good (as long as you're prepared for your hands to smell like focaccia for the rest of the day). Except for during the summer, they have a daily soup which is always very tasty. The regular dessert pastries (brownie, cookies, dessert bars) are all good but not stand-out good, but they sometimes have fancier cakes which are amazing. For their drinks, it is also really hard to go wrong. The masala chai latte is amazing - it's sweet but also richly flavoured with spices. The London fog is also very good. Both of these tea lattes use stone ground tea instead of brewed tea which I think contributes to the intensity. They do a great job with the matcha latte too - it's never clumpy at all. I used to be not the biggest fan of their coffee, but it's grown on me a lot. It's a bit on the acidic side, but if you don't mind that, then the flavour is pretty nice. I really like their mocha too (especially the peppermint mocha available in winter) - this is actually the only place where I really get mochas! They have pizza nights now (7-10 Wed-Fri) where you can get a flatbread pizza big enough to feed two for less than $15. Only the very basic flavours available (margherita, bianca, or pepperoni), but super tasty (and cheesy). The seating inside is limited and the space is so narrow that I find it very hard to be comfortable inside unless you go during a rare quiet hour, but I love the patio, which is huge and mostly covered. They sometimes turn the fireplace on during the...
Read morePraise be the Jeremy sandwich, the most delicious sandwich on campus; salami, cheddar, arugula, aioli, and balsamic reduction between two slices of herby focaccia really is a winning combination, especially since its always fresh out of the oven. The turkey and the veggy (zuchinni) sandwich are pretty good too (the veggy especially tasted really good, but unfortunately didn't feel as filling). All of these are $8.50
I don't know how their scones taste right now; a few years ago when I first started coming they were the best, fluffiest most flavourful scones I've ever had, but I tried it a few times again when I came back last year and they had gotten kinda dry so I haven't tried them since. I wonder if it's changed again in that time. Service is fast and cheerful. I don't have a discerning palate when it comes to coffee and tea so I can't comment there. Seating arrangement is a little unfortunate since there isn't much space inside the cafe, but there are heaters outside. Its also pet friendly, so bring...
