Easy to miss this place since it's hidden in Fairview Crescent at UBC, a bit separated from the main campus, but worth the visit. It seems to be a family-run shop, and they offer an eclectic assortment of food and drink: the standard coffee shop fare of sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee/tea, plus milkshakes, smoothies, tteok bokki, and some interesting desserts to round it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of everything I ordered! I got the Pesto Melt Bagel, Tiramisu, and an Apple Cider. The bagel was grilled lightly which gave it a little crispness and warmth without loosing the fresh texture, the tomatoes were fresh, and it wasn't too oily. The tiramisu was nice and a little bit different from the usual since it was more like a trifle or parfait than a cake slice. I liked the custardy mascarpone layers and the syrupy espresso sauce at the bottom. Finally, the apple cider was really good. It came with a piece of dried apple and lemon slice and had a spicy flavour, and was sweetened tastefully. The prices are pretty fair (cheaper than other UBC coffee shops). The shop itself is really cozy - it feels like walking into a home - they have lots of couches in addition to regular tables and chairs, and there's also seating upstairs which I didn't check out. The staff also seem to be very nice. I do think it would be nice if they had more vegetarian sandwiches, but otherwise I'm really happy to have finally tried this place, and definitely will...
Read moreThe service for this place has significantly descreased. I honestly used to love this spot for the cozy ambience and descent food but I went today and it was the rudest worker I've ever experienced. I'm not sure if she was the owner but she was telling the casheir what to do and never smiled and glared at customers. When my friend went up to order for me because they were treating me to a coffee she refused to let me stay saying that it was "one order per person". I understand if this is a rule but if someone is ordering for two people, you should not kick out paying customers. I used to always comes here and pay for my friends order or vice versa and this has never happened to me before. They even forgot to provide a lid for my coffee and when I asked for one, they seemed very annoyed to provide me with one. I just ended up giving my coffee back to my friend and left the establisment. If you want to make good serivce, please smile, it is rude to glare at customers. I also beleive that if a customer is paying for both themselves and their friends, they should not be kicked out for this. This place has good food but don't feel pressured to tip if the owner starts to glare at you while...
Read moreMy review is washed with nostalgia so, I may be biased.
The beanery isn't the prettiest or best maintained café but it serves it's purpose well. Swaths of students with laptops or families from Acadia place are the usual crowd. It's clearly built to serve it's unique community and does it well.
The staff are friendly and food is a good value. It's charming from the curb with a quaint covered patio and beautiful hanging baskets. The interior looks has aged, there are pillars so caked with layers of paint they resemble trees with raw bark. The menu is hand chalked and framed with a painted green wood trim that captures a "Friends" era aesthetic.
The space feels lost in time but not quite neglected. I find it's dated furniture and sprawling space is incredibly charming. It's almost as if a 2 story house was hastily converted into a café and adorned with misplaced and university issued furniture for student common areas from the 90's.
As I said it's a space that is brimming with childhood and adolescent nostalgia. From visits when I lived in Acadia to play pool to venturing over to see if it was still there many years later. I'm glad it's...
