I was really excited when I heard Big Way hotpot was opening a new location at UBC! I love hotpot, and I especially love how Big Way lets you customize your own ingredients and broth. This way, you can pick all your favourites, and make something that perfectly suits your tastes. I also like how the final price is determined by weight, so you can eat as much or as little as you want. I have a small appetite, so I always have leftovers when I eat out at a restaurant - but that’s not a problem when I eat here! I also like the large variety of different meat, vegetables, seafood, and noodles you can choose from - you think you’re done, but when you turn the corner there’s another wall of ingredients. You also get a free soft serve ice cream at the end.

I chose the mild mala tang broth. I made myself some sauce from the sauce bar, but I didn’t get to use it because the broth was already very salty. I like drinking the soup at the end, but I could only drink a few sips because it was too salty, sadly. This location just opened so the staff are still figuring things out, so I’m sure the broth will improve. For a hot pot restaurant, I think it’s better if the broth is less salty since there is a sauce bar for you to use if you want to add more flavour (the sauce bar had salt and even msg). But if it is too salty, there isn’t much you can do.

They’re very busy, so make sure to get on the waitlist way ahead of time. I got on the waitlist at 11:50am, and it took about an hour and a half until I got to the front of the line.

The customer service was great, and the servers were very attentive. The price was very good too, for everything I got in the photo it was...

Bigway Hotpot UBC is a diamond in the rough landscape that is the UBC food scene. My girlfriend and I lined up online to a staggering 150-person waitlist, yet it moved shockingly fast due to their excellent queue management and efficient workers. The food? Exactly what you’d expect from Bigway - if its bad its your fault. The place was clean and well lit, the wooden panelling of the hallway leading into the main seating area was a classy touch.

But let’s talk about the real MVP of our night, our server Oak S ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Its not often a staff member leaves such a hefty impression, yet I was truly blown away at the level of service which he provided. This guy didn’t just serve us; he delivered a masterclass in hospitality. When my soup came out low, he was there topping it up like some kind of hotpot guardian angel. Our water glasses? Never empty. Plates cleared with the upmost courtesy and promptness - before we even had to think about it. Ice cream in hand before we even asked. And the attention to detail? Unmatched. He made us feel like royalty, with his comforting aura, and can-do demeanor; it wasn’t just us - he was working the whole room with the same level of energy and care. Thank you to UBC Bigway and ESPECIALLY Oak S for delivering such a...

Went with my best friend. She tried Szechuan green pepper broth. It was a weird tingling type of spicy and she was surprised and didnt like it. I tried and found it interesting lol. Well it is stated on the menu about the tinglingness/tongue-numbing, but I think it'd be nice to remind customers about that again. We ended up sharing my broth (Tomato broth). We didnt want to let staff know/ask for different broth because it seemed busy and probably too much of a bother.

Oh and great service! Staffs so nice and friendly. After getting in and finished ordering, we werent sat right away and had to wait for a while. The staff offered free drinks as compensations for waiting! I didnt know they do that?! Wasnt offered free drink at Kerrisdale location. So nicee. Free ice cream too. And free takeout bowl and bag if you dont finish your food.

Doesnt accept UBC card.

Women bathroom's door blends in with the wall so it was funny discovering it. And make sure you push the door slowly as i surprised and almost hit someone.. There are 2 stalls inside.

It was my birthday too but I forgot to ask if they had anything special for birthday person 😭 next year I guess. I had a great time anyway
