Old Szechuan Chinese Restaurant — Restaurant in Greater Strathcona

This restaurant relocated from Chinatown to White Ave around 10 years ago, making it a long-standing establishment with a mix of good and not-so-good secret recipes. I've visited both locations, and while some dishes on the menu are excellent, others are just okay or even a bit disappointing. To fully appreciate their offerings, you need to enjoy authentic Szechuan flavors, which may not be for everyone. Personally, I had a pleasant experience, and the lady owner was friendly and welcoming.

However, their prices are higher compared to other similar Chinese restaurants, and the portions are smaller, which makes it feel overpriced. For what I paid, I expected better quality and larger portions, which is why I’m giving them a 4-star rating. Another drawback was the slow service—we waited a long time for our dishes, despite being the only customers in the restaurant from 4:40 p.m....

The best Chinese food in the city, I can't name a place it's better. The most authentic Chinese food that's for sure. No one has a better ginger beef everyone else Ginger Beef sucks compared to this place. Now I'm white person so I might not know the best Chinese food but there's usually not white people in this restaurant because it's a Chinese Hidden Gem. As well they cook all the meals from scratch and it is family owned. So a bit slower service because it's the mother and daughter serving but the great tasting food is worth the wait. Scratch cooking takes longer but it's fresh, the food never sat all day so it actually tastes good, not soft and soggy. This place was a journey. I had chosen them for some DanDan noodles I had been craving for weeks. The atmosphere could be considered a little “tacky” but I choose to call it “authentic”. The staff seemed surprised to get a late night table and one could argue seemed dubious in my ability to effectively use chopsticks, or handle any spice. When she laughed at my order and told me “it is very spicy, your lips will go numb” and I nodded acceptingly, she seemed unsure.
