My first Ramen experience was on the West coast in Vancouver, then I had “Winter Ramen” in downtown Toronto and I thought it was fairly good. I now know better! Crafty Ramen is the best kept Ramen secret in Ontario. The production is very meticulous. Quality control is at a very high level here friends! So many vegan options too! Taste is extremely flavourful and all of the dishes taste unique. If you like it hot, try a dab or two of the house made very very hot - hot sauce. This summer they have a selection of cold Ramen dishes (like a salad.. yes it’s very yummy and very refreshing on hot summers days & nights). I like that they have craft beer & Kombucha on tap. Water is self serve, yes!!! The communal table & bar seating allows you to make new friends or witness the magic of Ramen artistry while you get to know the chefs, cooks & owner. For what you get to eat, I’m surprised it’s not a crazy long wait time to get your food. Calling ahead for pick up orders is a good idea for peak meal times. I feel warm and fuzzy that I always get a good bye and thank you for coming from the host every time I’m leaving after my magical culinary experience. I bring all of my out of town guests to eat at Crafty Ramen. I wish they were open on Monday’s too, but these epicureans need a day of rest too so I got over it! Guelph is so blessed to have this restaurant here!

Who knew I'd find a ramen spot in Guelph. Loved it! Had the meat lovers ramen ($18). It has pork jowl kakuni, pork chashu & pulled shoulder, chicken breast, green onion, pickled shiitake and burnt sesame oil in rich pork & duck broth. I normally find pork broth too rich and thick, this one was just right. The picked shiitake was delicious and a great way to clear the pallet every so often. The sesame oil gave the broth a distinct taste which I enjoyed. I ended up ordering a full size of extra noodles ($1) since there was so much broth and meat left after I ate all the first serving of noodles. But couldn't finish it, had take home which was enough for next days lunch. The space it self is cozy being able to sit a max of 15-20. I ate at the bar where I could see the whole process. You order right at the bar and pay before finding a seat. You'll be served your order, but everything else is self serve (ie. complimentary filtered water and paid drinks). Ordering was easy as I looked up the menu before going. They've got cold, hot and spicy options for all different pallets. They've got a few appetizers and serve beer on tap. Highly recommend this place for anyone who's looking for a filling meal that warms the body. I will definitely come back when I'm back in Guelph... it helps that the staff was super friendly!

Lukewarm smiles serving Lukewarm Ramen. I don't know why this place has such rave reviews. It's awful :( We came here on a Thursday in the late afternoon. There were no other customers inside. I ordered the Northern Warmer and my wife ordered the Spicy Chicken Negi. The girl took our order and we sat at the empty counter and watched as our Ramen was slowly made infront of us. The bearded chef on the other side of the counter made our Ramen right in front of us, and didn't make eye contact, smile or acknowledge our presence in any way. As I watched our Ramen being finished the first red flag appeared as it didn't appear to be steaming hot at all. The food was brought around the counter to us. It was then I noticed that these $17+ bowls of lukewarm Ramen didn't even include an egg...that's an extra cost. My Northern warmer had a decent flavor but wasn't what I was expecting. The description of a Sapporo Miso Ramen with Corn and Butter was very inviting but what I got was very meh. The Butter turned out to be in the shape of little Robots which is a neat idea, but it only looked neat as the taste was just blah. The Corn was fried with some other veggies. Noodles were soft and over cooked and the Ramen itself wasn't hot. My wifes' Shio negi ramen was bland and had no flavor, and the chicken breast was rubbery and dry. Shio Ramen is a difficult thing to get right as it's a fine balance between bland and too much, but this was just bland and flavorless. Also the noodles were overcooked and too soft, and the Ramen itself wasn't hot. This was probably the 2nd worst Ramen I've had in my life, and my wife who is from Japan said it was the worst Ramen she's ever had. When we left our bowls were still half finished. It was that bad. I would have to say the worst thing about this place is they have a Tampopo poster on the wall. There was a ladder leaning infront of it but I noticed it eventually. Tampopo is an old cult classic Japanese film about a struggling Ramen shop owner and her journey to craft the perfect bowl of Ramen. There is a scene in that very film where the chef is explained how her Ramen wasn't being served hot enough...and here I am staring at this movie poster, thinking of this exact scene, while I slurp my bland lukewarm Ramen when I should be blowing on it first because Ramen should be served hot. Someone should take down that poster. Also, for $17+ include an egg in your Ramen. Yeesh!

Best ramen in town. Initially, I was a little bit disappointed about the quantity of the noodles but then I was told that you can add extra noodles for a dollar. Went and try again with extra noodles, and is very fulfilling. Yummy and full = Awesome. update[2019/03/30]: instead of adding a dollar noodles, you can also sumo size it for $2 (1/2 noodles and 1/2 broth). This is my favourite add on. update[2022/10/04]: In my last two experiences with crafty ramen (the gryphon), I was served with lukewarm broth, and it ruined my experience, hence the reduction of stars. It could be a mistake of new chef, but I wasn't happy about it. The noodles temperature were hot but the broth was lukewarm. So far, I have tried: - Chicken Tantan Men - Tokyo Salary Man - Gryphon (this by far my favorite) - Meat Lovers - Northern Warmer - Vegan Tofu Mapo (note: it's very spicy, more like numbing spicy - "mapo" szechuan style spiciness) - Vampire slayers (tonnes of garlic) - Oni (this is quite spicy!!! - I usually cleaned the bowl but not this one)

Having marked this for a while we finally made it to CR. The interior is cozy and limited seats available. We got the high seats right in front of chef. The service was quick. Tofu Tokyo Salary Man - the broth light and perfect flavour and miso notes coming through. The noodles perfectly cooked with a slight chew. The almost blackened tofu with sesame crust was amazing. Tofu Kaizen Warrior- similar flavours coming through. The tofu good and the broth a bit more saltier, but not bad. Tofu Spicy Negi - the broth a lot less spicier than I expected. The chilli oil drizzled is a nice touch and some toasted sesame oil finished this ramen. All the above were vegan, which makes this place unique and not just a dish or two for vegans like us. The only negative we felt was the temperature of the broth - much less hotter (temperature). Didn’t have gayoza’s available. I guess we have something to look forward to. Regardless - a must for vegan ramen lovers.

This location of Crafty Ramen is a staple to us and never disappoints. We’ve brought friends here multiple times and everyone always leaves raving about the food. We love everything on the menu, but I always look forward to the Summer menu because of their unique options. The ingredients are always very fresh and flavours are innovative. They recently upgraded their patio which was a nice touch from previous years. Our food was so delicious we forgot to take a picture until we were almost done our meal. The staff at this location are always great as well. Blake and Rashad went above and beyond with how they greeted us, served the food, checked in on us while eating and again after we were finished eating. They really care about the guest and the quality of the food. Great food is definitely worth the hour drive for us, but the service we received this time around was exceptional and already has us planning our next visit.
